To the Editor of The St. John Tele- graph : Sir,-\\'hen our beloved Queen Vic- toria died it _was a noticeable fea- ture thut the great majority of the people of this loyal city wore com- plimentary inourniiig of some des crilltiiin as an oiitward expression of their respect to our departed sover- eign. ” l“riday night. last we received the sad news of the death of our King who had endeared himself and who was beloved and honored hy all; but l regret to say that both Saturday and today complimentary mourning vvas coiispicuoiu-i by its absence. Scnrcely a man you met wore n black tie or black gloves.. or a wo- ninii who had even a small accessory -of wearing apparel as an. indication of our national bereavement. I feel confident that when the people of this city iiilly realize what we, as a nation, have lost they will display _ some outwaril token of their sorrow _ land respect. - _ ’ AN ENGLISHMAN. l’fflC'l"l`Y (llll.I. METHOD OF CONTROL. 'Arsenate of lead and llarii-i tirecll are practically the only insecticides in general use against the Codlll\iZ Moth. 2 pounds of arsciiatc of lead or two-thirds of a pound of Paris Green is used to 40 gallons of water. THE BEST TIME T() SPRAY. Spraying should be done immedi- ately after the blossoms ilropiand be- fore the calyix lobes close. The ub- ject is to deposit poison in the Calyx cavity, so that when the little worm enters and feeds in the cavity, it is killed. In New Hampshire experi- ments were conducted in nine orch- ards 'during the' years 1906, 1907 and 1908. Half of each orchard was sprayed for the Coddling Moth and hi-ilf was not sprayed. The result was that 42 per cent. of the apples on the trees not sprayed were vvormy, while only 11 pci' cent. of tliiise on the trees sprayed were wiirniy. Everyone should ‘be preparing to spray for the Codling Moth. DEFINITE GAINS FIIOM CUW Tl<]S"l`lNG. A. W. Hiainc of Dewilney, B. t"., writes as follows:- “When we joined the cow testing association in 1908 we had 21 cows, aged between -f and 7 years, with an average yield of 15,800 pounds milk. In 1909 our 21 cows averaged 8,300 pounds milk. We have l6ipiircbreds and 5 grade I-lolsteins. I would not think of stopping weighing and test- ing our milk as I feel satisfied that if a dairyman looks wcll to thc sire of his herd, and weighs and tests, his herd is bound to improve, and the hired men take more interest in their work, We commenced dairying eight years ago with the intention of bringing our cows up t_o an average of 0,000 pouiids milk each, \\'h_-icli we did in'about five years." i Such statements as the foregoing should prove inspiring to every dairyman. A fairly high staiidard of 0,000 pounds milk was rcaclicd in five years, and an increase of 2.3 per cent. has been added to that. Mr. llaiiie will prob-a'bly be up to 10,000 piiiiriils per cow soon. Tihat is one particu- larly interesting feature of cow test- ing, ideals are realized, then those still higher are sought for, again with. satisfactory results. Wlint ex- cellent hcrds could he developed if dairvmeu all over the iioniinion would take up cow testing in real earnest. _ MARITIME aiiioonirliiis. May 7, ioio. Quotations furnishcil by J. (Y.
