(Associated Press) WASHINGTON, April zl-Ths United States tariff commission re- ported today to the Seutae that there had been a record importa- tion oi pulpwood during the first quarter of this year but it voiced no opinion whether its study had led it to conclude‘ that a duty should be imposed. The commission said the connec- tion between the heavy imports and the depreciation oi currency, in pulp producing countries was not altogether clear in view oi contracts that had been let for European pulp before the currency change. Its report was based upon an investi- gation ordered by the Senate to de- termine the effect of the depre- ciation of foreign currency upon importatlons of pulp into the United States. "At all times, past and present," the report stated, "the great bulk of the importations of pulp wood and wood pulp into the United States has been from countries whose currency is depreciated. The only country from which signifi- cant imports of pulp are received and whose currency has not depre- ciated, is Germany. The principal sources oi our pulp imports from depreciated currency countries are Canada, Sweden and Finland and smaller quantities come from Nor- way."
