EUGENE SMITH The death occurred at his home in Middleton on Tuesday, sapegm. ber 7th., of Mr. Eugene Smith. at the age of fifty eight yen-s, 3cm in Middleton, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smith, Mr. Smith lived all his life on the' old home- stead which he made and kept as one of the outstanding farms of the district. His early .educatlon was received in the district school of Middleton and continued later through his earnest study and careful readine- m 101s he mar- ried Janie Ciarkin of North Wilt- shlre and together they establish- ed I. Christian home modeled on the Home of Nazareth and an example to all who knew it. As the welfare of his family was his supreme interest, he was es- pecially concerned with education and took a prornlnent part in ev- ery move to maintain and improve educational facilities. The whole community recognizes the debt of gratitude it owes to Mr. Smith for his active support and generous cooperation in every beneficial activity. As Trustee cf St. Mala- chy's Church, Kinkora. for many years, and as a zealous member of the Holy Name Society. he gave unstintedly of his time and energy ‘in faithful service. His whole life was a living profession oi his firm belief that we are created "to a- dore, love. and serve God here on earth” and his exempllfication of that love of God by kindness to- wards his neighbour won him a host of friends. Early in the summv. he he- came ill, and though at first his condition was not considered ser- ious, later developments showed that there was no hope of recov- ery. As he patiently awaited the end amid his own sufferings and the grief of his loved ones. the calmness and courage of those last days were a real inspiration to all who witnessed them. Rev. ranois McQuaid visited him fre- quently and administered to him the Last sacraments of the Catho- lic Church. Little more than a year ago his son, Russell, died at the early age of twenty-one, and the sympathy of a wldepread cir- cle of friends goes out to the family thus doubly bereaved. 0n Thursday. September ninth. a large congregation assembled for the mneral at St. Malachy's Church to pay their respects and offer their prayers during the Sol- emn Requiem Mass which was of- fered by. Rev. Francis MoQuaid, ssisted by Rov. Wilfred McCar- dle, Deacon and Rev. Wilfred Keefe. Subdeacon. Rev. Eugene Murray was Master of Ceremon- ies. Present also in the Sanctuary was Rev. G. V. McCa-‘be. a cousin of the deceased. The pallbearers were: Stephen Johnston. Mac- Phee of Clyde River. in her 55th year. Although a great sufferer of many months, Mn. MacPhee bore he illness with that fortitude and courage which always mark the life of s true Christian. She had several operations over a period of years, and was in the hospital for live months previous to her death. tv/here everything possible was done. by skilled Doctors and nurses, to alleviate her intense suffering. At times high hopes were held by her loving husband and family for her recovery. but God willed other- wise and on the above date she passed peacefully on, to be forever with the Lord.
