MITCHELL, | Office Sup’t ———— Pec a ae a a ae - NOVEMBER 20, 1879. +—— | “The Hatchery Job.” Tax latest vagary of the Summerside Journal is an attack on the salmon of Dunk River for not procuring the best part of the river to spawnin. In the opinion of our they should go higher up. motto, like his own, should be exelsior! Now admitting, which we readily grant, that he is an authority on the twin subjects of cold water and spawn- ing, it must have escaped him that the salmon, like himself, try to get as high as they can, and in this hilarious endeavor are stopped by the sluices at the hatchery, past which they cannot, by any possibility, pass, excepting when the gates are pur- posely opened. Aslight knowledge of the subject ho pretends to discuss would show him that the higher up a stream a fish hatching establishment is placed the less favorable is the siturtion ; for the reason that in spite of all precaution many of the gravid fish aro overtaken by the necessity ef spawning before they reach far up, and in this respect their fecundation is prac- tically lost. In another point the Journal mau shows at onco his pstriotism and his contemporary, heir igorance in deploring that salmon, as svon as the act of spawning is accomplished, go of on a bee line to New Brunswick. Why New Brunswick? Last night’s refrain must be riuging in his ears, ‘‘off she goes to Mirimazi, to come back (under N. P. policy) in the shape of sugar and tea.” He eaunot be aware that the coast fishery is of infinitely more value than the river fisheries; that rivers aro, in fact, mera feeders of the coast fisheries, and that the wiole south coast of the Gulf of St. Lawrence from near Quebec to east of the Bay of Chalew bristles wit!: salmon stations, for every one of which a license fee is charged, thus help- ing to make the fishery service self-support ing. The ishery of salmon has never been properly pursued as an industry along the coast of P. E. [., and partial attempts have shown a diminished product year by year for want of sucha breeding source as th: foresight of the Minister has now provided at Dank River and which the editor of the Journal now maligns an] jmis-representa. Perhaps, also, it may set our contemwpor- ary’s powerful mind somewhat at rest to be informe! that the Government had the whole ceurse of the Dunk Biver to choose, from, and the sits was the untrammelled selection of Mr. authority on fish-en'ture in phere,—who wade! for miles, on rathera Wilmot,—the greatest this hemis- cold day too, seeking for the many require- ments that neod to be combined in a fish: house. On Mr. Wilmot reporting that he had selectel the spot now oceupied by the Hatchery, the Minister, finding the site be longed to himself, generously donated as and wa‘er as the establishment can ever re juira, free of cost, excepting the expeuse o! conveyance. charge, with other like charges made by your conte uporary, falis to the ground. As to the building itself, it is there to apeak for itself ; and it must, in truth, be aaid is not only a work of which the Prov- ince may be prvul, but is most creditable to the energy and forethouzht of the Min- ister and tie pro.aptitule and good work- mansiip of the contrastors. The Torch Again Applied to Mr. Robertson’s Premises. Tae vacant dwelling house of Mr. E. Robertson, situated on Grafton Street, has been again visited by an incendiary. The torch was unhesitatingly applied; but the building was saved through timely in- terfererice with the flames. The secord fire was lit at six o'clock yesterday even- ing in a porch attached to the rear of the building. It was burning bright- ly when it attracted the attention of a gentleman and a number of small boys who were passing Grafton street. ‘They immediately applied water from buckets, and extinguished the flames. The City Marshal, on visiting the premises, discov- ered foot prints in the snow, which he be- lieved were those of the incendiary. They led to and from the spot where the fire was lit, and were traced through a broken corner of a_ fence—at the north west corner of the yard — into the yard of a house which fronts on Kent Sireet. They became obliterated there by marks of other foot-prints. No one has yet been arrested. An investigation was talked of but nothing has been done in the matter. et EE Oe Large Meeting of Merchants. AGAINST UNDUR CUSTOMS’ RESTRICTIONS. A PROTEST A large meeting of the merchants of this city was held at the Mayor’s office this fore- noon. The principal speakers were W. E. Dawson, Geo. Peake, Lemuel Beer, F. T. Newbery, William Brown, Fred’k Perkins and R. Young. Free expression was given to the feelings of the business community res- pecting the order that all goods entered at this port be examined by appraisers, as well as respecting many instances of undue and unnecessary strictness with importers whose integrity is above suspicion. After diseussion a committee consisting of F. T. Newbery, Benj. Rogers and William Brown, was appointed to draw up a memorial to the Minister of Customs and report at a future meeting. 4:GD> > - - Dipthoria in tho City Schools. We aro requested to state that we were misinformed respecting the prevalence of diptheria among the children attending the new West Kent Street School. Out of the 528 pupils, whose names are on the roll of that school, only four have died of that disease. It is true that the attendance during the past few weeks has not been as good as it should have been; but this was altogether owing to the false rumors re- specting the prevalence of diptheria in the school. We are happy to state, on the best authority, that there is not at present asingle case of diptheria in any family whose children attend that Institution. ere seh lt niiitiNanaiiinsiivibieiaieas To the Editor of the Examiner. Mr. Eprror,—Having just laid aside my usual evening luxury, the DaiLty EXAMINER. it strikes me to inquire of you what next will be the published plans of our illustrious Princess, so lately gone from ‘‘this Canada of hers.” The Ottawa news of her seems to quite do away with an impression we receive from English newspapers, that March is the date of her intended return; while still another authcrity says that the 22nd of January will bring her, again to us. *Tis plain one must not believe all one hears. Please find out the truth of these contradictory rumors, and inform your readers at your earliest convenience. ‘Tell us, too, all you can about this very interesting Hospital scheme, wit! }reference to which, its committee held a meeting to day. Charlottetown is most fortunate in having such a stafi of trained nurses in charge of the Institution as has been placed over it. I won- der what we shozld do without our evening paper with its cheery columns of interest, tel- ling us of the “‘last sweet thing in tea cups,’ and of the tall man’s thrilling atrocities, or per. hance of the classic harmonies which are said (o prevail in the sacred New York edifice.
