      Atlantic
      Canada
     
     
      came
      to
      UPEI
      for
      the
      Atlantic
     
     
      Debating
      Tournament,
      an
      an-
     
     
      nual
      event
      bringing
      together
     
     
      members
      of
      all
      of
      the
      univer-
     
     
      sity
      debating
      societies
      in
      east-
     
     
      ern
      Canada.
     
    

    
     
      In
      all,
      32
      teams
      from
      8
     
     
      Atlantic
      Canadian
      universities
     
     
      ~the
      University
      of
      New
      Bruns-
     
     
      wick,
      Atlantic
      Baptist
      Univer-
     
     
      sity
      (Moncton),
      Acadia
      Uni-
     
     
      versity,
      Mount
      Allison
      Univer-
     
     
      sity,
      Dalhousie
      University,
      St.
     
     
      Francis
      Xavier
      University,
      Uni-
     
     
      versity
      College
      of
      Cape
      Breton,
     
     
      and
      Memorial

      The
      turnout
      was
      ap-
     
     
      proximately
      double
      that
      ex-
     
     
      pected
      by
      the
      organizers
      of

      By
      process
      of
      elimina-
     
     
      tion,
      the
      number
      of
      teams
      was
     
     
      gradually
      reduced
      to
      two
      —
     
     
      Memorial’s
      Team
      “C”,
      and
     
     
      Dalhousie’s
      Team
      “B.”
     
    

    
     
      The
      final
      debate
      be-
     
     
      tween
      these
      teams
      took
      place
     
     
      at
      Memorial
      Hall,
      in
      the
      Con-
     
     
      federation
      Centre
      of
      the
      Arts.
     
     
      Dalhousie
      “B”
      —
      the
      “govern-
     
     
      ment”
      team
      —
      made
      a
      case
     
     
      proposing
      limiting
      advertise-
     
     
      ments
      for
      birth
      control
      pills
      in
     
     
      magazines
      oriented
      towards
     
     
      the
      pre-teen
      market.
      After
      a
     
     
      hard-fought
      debate,
      Memorial
     
     
      “C”
      came
      out
      on
      top,
      and
      won
     
     
      the
      first
      prize
      position.
     
    

    
     
      Chris
      Bentley,
      Physics
     
     
      major
      and
      head
      of
      the
      UPEI
     
     
      Debating
      Society,
      said
      that
      this
     
     
      year’s
      debating
      tournament
     
    
   
   
    
     
      was
      a
      great
      success.
     
    

    
     
      “This
      was
      the
      first
      time
     
     
      that
      we
      put
      it
      on
      ina
      long
      time,
     
     
      and
      we
      did
      really
      well
      at
      it,”
      he
     
     
      said.
     
    

    
     
      The
      reaction
      of
      off-Is-
     
     
      land
      debaters
      to
      the
      first
      UPEI-
     
     
      hosted
      tournament
      of
      the
     
     
      school
      year
      was
      also
      quite
     
     
      positive.
     
    

    
     
      “This
      year’s
      tournament
     
     
      was
      well-organized
      —
      it
      was
     
     
      really
      good,”
      said
      John
      Scanlon,
     
     
      a
      debater
      from
      Acadia.
     
    

    
     
      The
      Atlantic
      Debating
     
     
      Tournament
      is
      only
      the
      first
      of
     
     
      two
      debating
      tournaments
      that
     
     
      will
      be
      hosted
      by
      the
      UPEI
     
     
      Debating
      Society.
     
    

    
     
      In
      March,
      UPEI
      debat-
     
     
      ers
      will
      host
      a
      second
      tourna-
     
     
      ment:
      the
      fourth
      Lucy
      Maud
     
     
      Montgomery
