Se ee en cena teen THE The Irish Emigrant’s Lament I'm sitting on the stile, Mary, Where we sat side by side On a bright May morning, long ago, When first you were my bride. he corn was springing fresh and green, The lark sang loud and high, And the red was on your lips, Mary, And the love-light in your eye. The place is little changed, Mary ; Che day is bright as then ; The lark’s song still is near my ear, The corn is green again. But I miss the soft clasp of your hand And your breath warm on my cheek, And I stili keep listning for the words That you never more will speak, Tis buta siep down vonder lane Where the litile church stands near, Che church where we were wed, Mary ; L see the spire from here But the churchyard lies between, Mary, And my step m*y break your rest; For I've laid you dariing, “down to sleep,” With your baby on your breast Yours, was the good, brave heart, Mary, That still kept he ping on, When the trust of God had left my soul And my arm’s young strength was gone Phere was comfort ever on your lip, And the kind look on your brow ; I bless you, Mary, for that same, Though you cannot hear me now, I bless you for the pleasant smile Wher your heart was fit to break, When the fever pain was knawing there, And you hid it for my sake I bless you for the cheering word Wher your heart was sad and sore ; Oh ! I’m thankful you are gone, Mary, Where grief can’treach you more, I'm bidding you a long farewell, My Mary, kind and true; But I ll not forget you, darling, In the land I’m going to. They say there’s bread and work for all, And the sun shines always there ; But I'll not forget old Ireland. Were it fifty times as fair. And often in those grand old woods I'l} sit and shut my eyes, And my beart will travel back again To the place where Mary lies. Aud I'll think I see the little stile Where we sat side by side, And the springing corn, and the bright May morn, When first you were wy bride {The original poem from which the Latin one was composed, by Mr Kirby of Tusket How Mark Twain Gently Broke an Unpleasant Bit of News. Rev. J. Hyatt Smith relates this: “When I was lying with my brother in Buffalo, Mark Twain oecupied a cottage across the street. We didn’t see much of him, but one morning as we were enjoying our cigars on the veranda after breakfast, we saw Mark coming to his door in his dressing gowo and slippers and look over at us. He stood at his door and smoked for a minute, as if making up his mind about something, and at last opened his gate and came lounging across the street. There was “n unoceupied rocking chair on the veranda, and when my brother offered it to him he dropped into it with a sigh ofrelief. He smoked for a few moments aod said :-— “Nice morning.” “Yes, very pleasant.” “Shouldn’t wonder if we had rain by and by.” “Well, we could stand a little.’ “This is a nice house you have here |” . Yes, we rather like it.” **How’s you family ? “Quite well—and yours?’ “Q, we’re ali comtortable.”’ There was another impressive silence, and finally Mark Twain crossed his legs, blew a puff of smoke into the air, and in his lazy drawl remarked : “I suppose you're a little surprised to see me over here so early. Fact is, 1 haven’t been 80 neighborly, perhaps, as | ought to be. We must mend that state of things. But this merniog I came over because I thought you might be iuaterested in knowing that your roof ison fire. It struck me that it would be a good idea if— But at the mention of fire the whole family dusted up stairs, trailing language all the way up. When we had put tbe fire out and had returned to the veranda Mark wasn’t there me. The Highland Schottische. The High!and Schottische, is to be the fashionable dance the ceming sea- son. Says the New York Sun:—Prof. Brooks waited an instant for an inspirit- | ing bar of music from the piano and then, gliding gracefully on his toe, took three steps quickly and, lifting a foot from the floor lightly, touched his heel to the calf of his leg. Then he slid sideways, with an impressive glissade movement. The combination was some- thing that eclipsed even the masterly redowa slide of Mr. Arthur Leary in the Charity Ball quadriils and the fifteen professors who watched the poetry of the motions clapped their hands witir delight. They kept on applauding and made the professor do it all over again. “What do you call it ?” we asked, try- ing to make a diagram of the sionous movements, “That,” said the professor, proudly, is the new Highiand Schottische, which is to be the society dance of the season this year. Itis imported from England and Scotland and will be intro. duced in all first-class academies as soon as the dancing clusses open. It must beseen to be fully compre- hended,”’ The fifteen other professor unanim ‘ously resolved to teach the Highland Schottische when thew went back to their classee i> 22> - a Special Notices. —— lor bargains in everything gc to R.
