TARBUSH. 104 Fitzroy St. City. 6283-12-23M6ip_d . ll llill LlllllMiilK lilllli The Kings County “Beattie” is no more! After weathering the storms of upwards of seventy winters and serv- ing as a grim object lesson to male- factors and law breakers generally the old Kings Countyjaii has at last succumbed t0 the ravages of time aided by n resolute hand of 'workmen who in the latter purt of August began the work of diollsh- ing the ancient structure. Ac rdinil t.o the prison books the first prisoner was confined in the old jail in the month of May. 1838, just one year af- ter Queen Victoria was crowned. Mr. Donald B. McPhee being then jail- keeper. The year that saw the op- ening of the old jail is also notable as being the year that witnessed the Rebellion of 1837-38 in Upper and Lower Canada, so lt may fairly be said to have had its inception in rath- cr stirring times. while by a curious coincidence the year of its destruc- tion finds Canada and the Empire again involved in war. The old juli stood on rising ground iii. thc north end of the town and uw- lng to its great height could -be seen from _a very considerable distance. Besides the necessary accomodation for criminals and debtors, for im- prisonment for debt was in vogue at that time and for many years after- wards, tho old jail building contained tho koepers’ quarters and also the Court llousc, which was situated in the uppcr story and was lbe scene of many noted trials among others that between Rev. John Macdonald, parish priest of St. Miirgarct‘s and .lohn Mciiitosh, Esq., member of i.lie Colon- ini Legislature for the First- District oi' Kings County which attracted cou- iiidcrable attention at the time in thc eastern _part of thc county wlieirc thc troubles which culininuted in this notcd law suit. arose. For ii completi- uccouiit of this trlnl the rcsiicr is rc- fcrred l.o thc Illstory of thc Catholic Church in P. E. island, by .v. J, C. MacMillan, where it is desiilgibed nt. length. lt is sufficient for the purpose of this sketch to say thai. the cluirgc against. Mr. Mclntosli was iliat. ot' dis turbing public worship, and that the best. lcgul taleiii: iii thi-. colony wus employed is shown by thc fact. that Messrs. Robert Hodgson (afterward Sir Robert. Hodgson and father ot' the late Judge Hodgson) and Edward Palmer. afterwards Chief Justice oi' the Province, were counsel i'or ilic plaintiff Rev. Mr. Macdonald. while Mr. Charles Binns defended-Mr. Mc- .I ' D . Y - Logan, Senior. ' who after having charge for many years was succeeded by-his son the late Donald 1-1. Logan. who held the position till his death in the spring of 1912 when the present genial incumbent. Mr. William H. Yoston took charge. Probably the Ilast public function which took place lu the old iaii court house was the iinininatlou for the General Local Elec- tion of 1886. The nomination took place on June 23rd of that year and the 'election followed one week later. |Hon. Mr. Sullivan, the present Chief Justice was leader of the government at that time this being the occasion of his final appeal to the people when his government was sustained by a good majority. lt is worthy oi’ note that not one oi' the candidates re- turned at that time lioids\a seat in .the present legislature, the last to do so being Senator-McLean. who in that year was rctumed for the First District along with tho late James R. McLean of Souris. Among other grim momeutoes of ye olden time to be seen in thh old jail were the iron shackles in which the prisoners' feet werc confined and sev- oral parti-colored coats in which those sentenced to hard labor were dressed,_ besides an iron ball and chain which was attached to thc logs of those who happened to prove refractory. The last remaining vestage of the old 'pris- on-tlie high picket fence; which sur- rounded thc jail yard was torn down lust week and nothing now remains to mark tho site lint the pump which stood in the iioutlicnst corner of the prison yard.
