It seems to be supposed that we are hostile to the establish- ment of a new and large Hotel. Such a suppo- sition im quite a mistake. We should be very glad to see a large edifice erected here for the secommedation of travellers, domestic and fo- reign,—-we vote for public mprovements of all hinds, at all times, and in all places, eape- cially steamboats, hotels, railways, and stage coaches,— and we would be amongst the very last to discourage an enterprising capita- lat frow erecting o large Hotel in this City. The scle object uf our remarks on Monday lust, was, te correct an erroneous impression sought to be made by the Islander, to the effect, that joreign or Colonial travellers could not be accom- modeted with reepectn dle boarding and lodging if they visited this City. We believed they could— we made enquiries tu confirm our belief. The result was, that were than double the wumber of these whe eume to visit us during the Summer manthe could be accuiamodated. We published ® list of the houses, with a brief statement of their Tesourees, at which accowmudation could be ob- tamed. We did uot parade thew as “ first class Hotels,” ia the pease in which that phrase ia un- deretoud in cities like’ Buston and New York; but as highly reapectalie houses—in fact, houses a0 well deserving of the name of first class hotels here, as wore. preteatims houses io St. Juau or Halifax. “Werbtve wo particular regard fur the houses we have went vued—we would noi shed & bear if two-thirds of (uem were shut up to-mor- tow, aod vue guod large Hotel established on ‘weir ruins, But before a large Hatel can be sally aud efficieotly curried ov, two thirds of the fall Hotels must be closed—they capuut ull do a yeying business. The great annoy auve ja, there are sutively too misoy suiall Hotels and Hoarding Huuses; but there willbe iunmonse trouble in crush. ‘og them, if the thing should be ever attempted ; much lower thau sugar is generally sold for in our market. It is only fair that these facts should be made known, and that encouragement as far os possible should be given to o new and valuable enterprise. THE CLVIL WAR IN THE STATES. NEWS BY TELEGRAPH.
