There is much doubt and ccniiictoi statement with regard to the number of troops, and the losses ` l'o8P°°°lV°‘ ly oi the two armies engaged in the lllo battle at the Yaln River. The Russian force on or near the scene, not all ol which wasactually engaged is variously esti- mated at £1,011) ta 59,000. The Japanese force was probably 8ll,iI)0 to The Russians now admit losses of between 3,000 and 4,il.\0. As the Japanese were the attacking party throughout, it would seem prob- able that their losses would be as great asthose of the Russians, as the latter fought under cover of entrenchments. But allowance must be made lor the ap- . parently great superiority of the Japan- ese artillery and riils fire. And yet no Japanese account has yet admitted a loss ofmore than till. The Russians claim that _the Japanese losses were greater than their own. A London newspaper de- clares the bittle to have been “the bloodiest since the battle of 0mdurman," Again there are conflicting accounts as to the Russian losses in guns and prison- ers. One account tells ot 20 field guns lost, another of 28 guns; another of 22 quick-firing guns and 8 machine guns, and still another account says the Rus- sians lost 31 guns. The'Russians say they disabled the :runs by breaking the breech blocks, which was prohably but partially affected, as in one case all the men and horses of a battery were killed. The Japanese accounts `do not mention that the captured guns were dis- abled. lt is a great disgrace in the Russian army for the men ol a battery to lose their guns. For a hundred years, down to a recent date any regiment los- ng its nuns was struck off the army roll. mmm. use been rwl=.4°‘l- hstore the present wir. The repeated and persistent efforts made by Admiral Togo, each more deter. mined than the former, to block up the' entrance to Port Arthur, shows the snpremeimportanee he attaches to hott-I ling up the Russian fleet. At one time some weeks ago six large stone laden vessels were sunk in the roadatead but not precisely In the right position. In the latestaitevnpt on May 8 twelve ships, averaging over will toaacacbvrere dar- patched but most of them were sunk by Russian fire from the forts, and not in ine' desired position. 'nie wrecks of eight of them have been definitely located, and two others were also sunk while the remaining two turned back owing to the severity of the Russian fire. The sea bottom is thus strewn with wrecks, sixteen of them being Japanese hulks sunk for the purpose of blocking ,the channel, while one Russian battleship and other smaller craft have been sent down by Japanese torpedo toata and mines. The losses oi the Russian ileetin ofllcers and men now makc` a total of nearly 1,000. With the purchase of the Hotel Davies and the promise of its early reopening it seems a pity that we have not a Tourist Association in active working to stimulate tourist travel in this direction. There is yet time to do much before the fourth of July when the tide of American travel sets in. News travels pretty fast these days, [and if the new hotel management, the railway and the steamship companies whose steeiners ply to and from the Island will bestir themselves to let the outside world know we are again in a position to accommodate tourists in good numbers, we may yet enjoy afair share of the tourist business. We regard it as exceedingly fortunate that the hotel is to be-reopened, and we trust that steps will be taken that will ensure its being kept open for years to come. -1 HOW TO BEAUTIFY THE COMPLEX- ION.
