VESSELS UNDER
CONSTRUCTION AT PRESENT
LONDON, Oct. 13.-That England
is determined to maintain her pre-
dominence on the sea is indicated by
the latest Lloyds register of ships
ping. 432 vessels, of 1,536,177 tons.
were under construction in the Unit-
ed Kingdom on September 30th, not
including vessels under 100 tons.
The tonnage now llnder construction
is nearly 30.000 tons greater than
that in hand at the end oi last quart-
er, but 187.000 tons leon than the ton-
nage building twelve months ago.
One vessel being built exceeds 40,-
000 tons; another will be between
20.000 and 40.000 tons.

now closing for two weeks’ holidays,
the time for.recelving subscriptions
to the Prince Edward Island Students'
Gift Fund has been extended for two
weeks after`the re-opening of such
schools. The fact that the maximum
subscription amount was placed at a
dgure to enable each' pupil to do his
or her share of patriotic giving makes
it necessary for students of each
school to take part, and in con-
sequence of present holidays, the
.teachers are not in a position to put
the matter before their pupils until
‘about Oct. 25th. Teachers of schools
