At the regular lnonthly meeting of the Summerside Board of Trade held last night in the Town Hall. the following resolution was mov- ed by Mr. Fred Blngharn, seconded by Mr. T. Earle Hickey, CA, and passed: , ”Moved that the Summeraide Board of Trade go on record as favoring the purchaso of the old post office building by the town, as a temporary measure. for pos- sible disposal at a later date to a responsible party or parties. who would see that it would be a credit to the town and not become an eyesore or made use of in a nan- ner undersirable to a residential district. It is suggested that no further capital or operating ex- pense be made by the town other than the purchase price." Considerable discussion took place regarding this matter and the consensus of opinion of those present was that the town should Ectlulge possession of the building and s te. The fact that, unless it is taken over by the town, it could be purchased by private parties and perhaps converted into a warehouse. was a deciding factor in the action of the board in support- ing the purchase of the post office building by the towll. It was stated that the purchase price would be 57,500.00. The Provincial Government hav- ing indlcated that it had no in- tentlon of purchasing the property, the Town of Summerside is the next on the priority list and should the town decide against the pur- chase the building will then be put up at auction to private party or parties. Parking Space Report Mr. William Hayward, reporting forvthe committee appointed to look into t e matter of ncquirlngo. parking ep e in summerside to take care of the large number of cars which. especially on Saturday nlkhts. come to Summerside and cause much congestion of traffic by parking on Front Street, sub- ed out tlfat the project is one that will involve much study and mag there are many angles to be con. eidered. The motion passed at meeting of the board that the Derking space he acquired on the water front had met with some disapproval by many people as it would involve the construction of uses wall to protect the cars from salt water spray on windy days and nights. This wall would cost in the vicinity of 520.000. . 'Another matter which hid been uiscuseed at the last meeting of the board was the question of provid. ing the Town Council with the authority to demolish any building mg whom the resides and Mrs. Joe T. Earle Hickey. C. A., point- ed out that in his opinion, this building actually need not have been in the condition it is now had the Property been given the protection it should have been given as priv- ate property. He said that the OWDGF. Mr. Earl MacDonald had paid taxes on the rink for many years, that it had cost him thous- ands of dollars to repair it each year due to acts of vandalism, and he felt that it was unfair to pass the Proposed resolution and thus single out this particular property when there were a number of oth- are which were in the some cate- gory. No action was taken on the mat- ter except to instruct the secretary to again write the Town Council asking that the proper authority be obtained to demolish any building which. in the opinion of the fire marshal, fire hazard. , Mr. Lloyd Gorrill b ht matter of the inconvreliilignceugaii: ed '5” me Wm” M 5111! province, travelling to the mainland by the fact that-there is no seven olclock crossing of the car ferry in the morning.
