(Continued From the Third Page.)I _ So far in the study of the_aurora the means have becn limited, and _we have been restricted in our researches lo mere ocular observations andthe effects of the auroral displays upon inexpensive apparatus. I have already referred to the color of the aurora, and, incidentally to the motions in movement, but an appreciation of iheiutensity of this force can only be arrived at by noting the rapid motion in the individual paits ot a display, such as from side to side, or in wave form, like a. curtain, but also a mgve-ment of different pars , of the display from south to north. and vice versa, or a movement of different parts- of the display towards each othl r. as though the parts were acting from attraction and repulsion. As to the height ofthe auroral patches arcs, bows, coroiiac-for in such forms they generally appear--but 1 trle is de.- iinitely known. Frequently I have ob- served them io appear below the stratus form of cloud, :ind therefore quite near the surface of the earth. DESCRIPTION OF AN AURORA. By way of illustration, I select the following reference from my notes to a display occurring at at seven in the evening of January 21, 1899, at Cape Tegetthoff, our headquaiters in Franz J o_sef Land :-- _ - "_The 'Arctic night ia displaying a. _magnificent furnishing of varlcoloreo _cloths ef gold and silks ot silver-now in _tumbling arcs of trembling bows, .in hanging curtains or waving tapeslry, and then in dancing beams or ascending rod of gold, in pots of color or quies- cent _seas of silver, all swaying from the sparkling stars, deiguing even to east a resplendent arc to the snowclad earth itself, resting it upon the basaliic r.ti of Tegettlioff.” ' - se nel bgnltis spire. sat... bout I - . spot of this display suddenly de- ‘scending appeared to hang below the summit of the spire. dimming its upper ouiline,'the intense prrtiou ofthe dis- .pluy intervening brtweeu myself and the spire. ' Nncnssrrv or FURTHER nnsnancri, What a pity that elaborate scientific apparatus has never been placed upon those portions of the earih’s surface where such phenomena len‘d_themsel~ves to investigation! For is not this great- waste for wan_t_ of some medium to sei it to work ? _ With proper instruments the exact ‘ nature of this force could be demon- strated. Observations elaborate the summer. season, wlienithe' arora is invisibl9_toithe_ nakod eye, in order to demon_s'trate` its perinanency» throughout the year. " " _GREAT » AITAINABLI RESULTS- ' _ There is practically sine end 'to the purposes for' which this great _ forge could b_e_utiliz_ed. _ Indeed. it couldbe used to '_-_light np. the _ Arctic region; themselves throughout the long Arctic night, and thus afford the explorer tar greater gppt`>1_f_tunities_for Polar research of every kind, for during the winter the surface conditions are at their best. e _ This, however, is buta minor. con.. sideration, in view of the great results that would follow from the application of this force to commercial anairs `--in the populous sections of the earth, and why could not this force be led _along great wiresor lines as readily as tae' electrlc fluid is now conducted in cables from continent to continent? e _ ln order to arrive at more definite con- clusions concerning the auroral phe_n¢.. menou an expedition should be 0;. ganized for thepurpose of studying the phenomenon in all its details. The ex- pedition should be well equipped with iiustruments, and should be composed of men who thoroughly undqggand electricity and the appliances bv which it may be rourroled and put lo practical purposes. Such an expedition could also contribute to geographical and other knowledge either in the North or South Polar regions. Once the great force were chained to n:an’s purposes, what a saving would foilow in labor and illumination and fuel. ai d what an impetus would be given to commerce in now almost in- accessible regicns. Without doubt the north magnetic pole is the centre or this great force in the North Polar re- gious, and as this point lies just to the northward of the Hudson Bay 1-egigmig is therefore at the very ihrtshcld of the vast British American territory. The successful utilization of the great Shree which is annually made manifgft y indescribably magnificent displays over that territory would certainly lead to the comfort and happiness of ihe' Peqple of those regions.to say nothing ot its still greater possibilities in more populous regions. li-11-i .
