This is a time when all of us who love freedom can- not be bound together too closely by every pos- sible bond; and we are fortunatc, indeed, in belonging t0 a great community of free na- tions who," etc, etc, etc. _ Sentiments of this kind, the Star piously believes, will meet “with widespread indorszi- tion throughout the Dominion." But would not deeds be more to the point? Potato Industry Survey The co-operation of all our Island potato producers is requested in connection with the study of up-to-date facts about potato produc- tion and marketing which is to be made by the Provincial Department of Agriculture with the assistance of officials of the Economics Divis- ion nf the Federal Department. The announce- ment by Dcputv Minister W. R. Shaw appear- ing iii today's issue explains the importance of this survey and should be given careful reading. Tlicre is iin doubt that the infnrmaiiflln thus gathered and analyzed will be of consid- erable value in fitrther developing the potato industry. Farming today is a keenly competi- tive business, nowhere more so than in potato production. and cspt-ciallv in seed production for WlllCh Prince Edward Island has become world famous. It speaks well for the initiative of our growers and shipper! that we have held this enviable lead year after year. All the more reason why there should the the fullest co- operation in the prpjcct now under way, which is solely for the benefit of the industry, and on which the Provincial Deparment is to be Ctilmmetirlcrl for having initiated. Canada's Exports Slump The Dominion Bureau of Statistics has issued a report on Canada's external trade dur- ing the first four months of the calendar year which reveals a sharp drop from the high lev- els of the corresponding period of r945. Im- ports and exports for January, February, March and April, 1946, were valued at $1,- 264,333,ooo, as against $i,6o7,7i3,ooo in the comparable period of I945. The decline of the four-month period amounted to $343,380,000, the ratio of lost; being 4o per cent. The Bureau's report docs not given breakdown as bet en import; andexports for the whole four nth period. but the figures for April show an abrupt Ogvnw id tren ‘of the latter and e fairly sub- Jnclr-ase‘ of the former. vlllhfipfll," i946, Ciinada’; uttemai trade, i" “$.94 ports for the month rose to $60,756,262 from: $133,627,000 in April, i945. The decline in ex- ports during the month was therefore 4o per cent, while imports rose by 20 per cent, These statistics show two very (lfiflllltfi trends in our export trade. Canada's sales abroad are dropping rapidly from the inflated records of the war years, whereas we are im- m porting more goods from foreign coittitric, now than we were at the very peak of Illt‘ war- time pcrioil. In April our imports were only about $17,000,000 in value below our exports. While this levelling-up process may reasonably be expected to feature the months ahead. there is no doubt that at the present time Canada's import trzidc is being stimulated to :i roiisidcr- able degree bv the decline of produclivi- activ- itv in the country since the end of the war. This external trade situation zicccntuatcs the need of an acceleration of production, if the national income is tn b0 iiiziiiitaincrl on stand- aids that will €l'l3lllL‘ CZHIZKlZI to finance the trcmendous obligation» created by the war and necessitated by an imposing [)O5[-\\'Zil' pro- -A farmer in New Zea-land gramme 0f social ivclfzirg and national recon- struction. The Federal Government has been collecting and spending taxes 0n .1 scale nevcr dreamed ‘of in pro-war years. Its immediate task should be to adopt measures that will gcar up production all along the line.
