Of a quiet, unobtrusive disposition, never| thrusting himself ‘to the front, Major Bartlett pur- sued the even tenor of his way in our midst for the. past forty years. He was always the same--bright,| optimistic and kind hearted. He had an especially tender hearti where children were concerned, and many a poor| family had their Christmas brightened by thought- ful gifts which SantaClaus, at his instigation, sent them. He never failed to support any movement in the public interest and when called upon to take an active part, only his diffidence kept him from being prominent in public affairs- Anything he could do "behind the scenes, anything he could do in execu- tive capacity he gladly undertook, and anything. he did undertake was always thoroughly and efficiently carried out. Major Bartlett was not a self-seeker,- nor was he one to shirk his share of responsibility. Never an active politician, yet he consistently sup- ported the Liberal-Conservative cause and strongly favored the National Policy. As President of the Guardian Publishing Company he was most devoted to the duties of his office, conscientiously discharg- ing them, and loyally supporting the party in season and out of season without thought of reward. We miss him as the wise counsellor and head of this publication; and we shall miss him as a-l-eal-heaictetl friend who always had a word‘ of congratulation when things were going well, and a word of eii- cotiragement in times of difficulty. . In their hour of sorrow, the sympathy of every‘- ‘one who knew the Major will go out to his widow ‘and tither bereaved ones who have been so suddenly land so unexpectedly deprived of a devoted husband land father. - Hcsrlclors (‘lf()\\'lN(i Q The revelations in connection with the admin- istration of the Federal road grant in Nova Scotia are no doubt partly responsible for the suspicion ‘that more money has been expended on the Prince Edward Island roads than the amount of work done ‘would justify. In any case members of the govern- ‘nient have been indulging in suspiciously extrava- 'gant adulation of the amount and quality of the work done. Come and get first choice. the work done, etc., etc.. l It has been a habit of the Bell government to prepare the public with a little propaganda when something special was about to be launched- Before dripping with tears over ‘the awful financial condi- tion of the province and it even went so far as to publish a one sided financial statement showing al- leged indebtedness far beyond the limits of truth and reason. Then came the big Taxation Act. Now a few patches of turnpiked road on which gangs of men were working all summer, have been glorified into a monument for the Bell Government. Possibly this is because they did nothing else which would furnish an excuse for crowing; possibly the cost is beginning to loom out of proportion to the size of ‘the monument, but it is a fact that when the Patriot rooster takes a fit of strained and discord- ant crowing there is an egg somewhere in the vici- nity ready to be hatched. Plulnly because by cooked accounts they premeditated to de- ceive the people and libel their predecessors, and still more pliiln- ly because even the four short months of their own mismanage- ment was of such a bungled char- actcr that they dure not let their record be exposed to the light of flay. Some districts have done splendidly; the others, we feel sure, would do credit to themselves ~ if songone or more live residents would take the - matter in hand. Our province has a name for ge- ‘ nerosity in every good cause; the name belongs to the province generally and no section of it would knowingly place itself in the black list if the cause were brought to it personally. .We trust this will be done at once for the credit of those districts that c so far, doubtless through neglect, have failed to re- . port. eThe burden of maintaining the hospital should be equitably borne by all.
