oq e “FIRE BY FIRB." Hon. George Brown on the Na- tional Policy. In L865, during the debate on confeder- ation, Hon. George Brown, as reported on page 105 of the official report, said : se] say one of the best features of this union is, that 1f,in our commercial relations with the United States we are compelled by then to MEET FIRE BY FIRE—it willenable us to stop this improvidence and turn the current of our own trade into Far be it from me _ to say Laman advocate of a coercive com- mercial policy—on the contrary, entire free- dom of trade, in my opinion, is what we in this country strive for. Without hesita- tion, | would, to-morrow, throw open the whole of our trade and the whole of our waters to the United States if they did the same to us. [Just like Sir John MeDon- ald /| But, if they tell us, in the face of all the advantages they get by Reciprocity, that they are determined to put a stop to it, and if this is done through a_ hostile feeling to us—deeply as I should regret that this should be the first use made by the Northern States of their new found liberty—then, I say we have a policy and a good one of our own to fall back upon.” | And now we're going to fall back upon it. Brow, Sec’y. 2in ‘Wen any of the numerous scandals which have marked the history of the pre- sent donothing Grit Government are brought to the notice of the public, the apologists of the Administration in this Province say, ‘‘lé was only aw error of judgment. ’ One of the leading articles in to-day’s Patriot commences: ‘The fight goes bravely on.”” These words are precisely the same made use of by George Brown in his now historic *‘ Big Push” letter to Senator Simpson. Was the editor of the Patriot, when he commenced this article, thinking it necessary to advise his friends to COME fOWN HANDSOMELY? New Sr. James’ Cuurcu.—'This edifice is fast approaching ~o completion. The painters are engaged upon the interior, and the minor appointments of the building are being provided. It is expected that the en- tire work will be finished on the Ist Octo- ber next. The Church will be opened for public worship on either the 13th or 20th ult. Full particulars as to the services on the occasion, and pew arrangements, will be made known shortly. The church is an ornament to the town, and reflects credit upon the enterprise of the congregation and upon the taste of the architects — Messrs. Sterling and Harris. Tue Patriot says: ‘* We may say with reference to what Mr. D. Davies said in the Atheneum that the Hvaminer has grossly misrepresented him. Mr. Davies said that when a man talked in the House * . ba * * * * on subjects of which they are utterly ignorant, he was sure to be found ont. You could not bring up a subject on which some one or other was not well informed, and if the speaker talked without a knowledge of his subject and exposed his ignorance, he would be skinned.” Therefore, Sinclair, Davies, McIntyre, Yeo and Perry didn’t speak. Just so! Then, where does the ‘‘ gross misrepresenta- tion” of the ExXaMINER come in ! An Astonishing Fact. A large proportion of the American peo ple are to-day dying from the effects of Dyspepsia or disordered liver. The result of these diseases upon the masses of in- telligent and valuable people is most alarm- ing, making life actually a burden instead of a pleasant existence of enjoyment and usefulness as it ought tobe. There is no good reason for this, if you will only throw aside prejudice and skepticism, take the ad- vice of druggists and your friends, and try one bottle of Green’s August Flower. Your spoedy relief is certain. Millions of bottles of this medicine have been given away to try its virtues, with satisfactory results in every case. You can buy a sample bottle for 19 cents to try. Three doses will re- lieve the worst case. Positively sold by all druggists on the Western Continent. Arseneault addressed the electors in French. Hodgson and Kelly followed, reviewing the issues of the contest. Perry next spoke, amid con- tinued interruption. Hodgson replied in a telling speech ; and Perry withdrew from the meeting. Hodgson’s_ allusion to Arseneault’s refusal to join the Davies Government was received with repeated cheers. The meeting closed with great en- thusiasm, voting unanimously for Howatt and Hackett—who are sure of a solid vote at Fifteen Point and Egmont Bay. > ++ <m -+ o-- isi Cheering News from Quebec Pro- vince. Monrrea, Sept. 10, 1878. The nominations throughout the Pro- vince indicate that the calculations I have sent :you heretofore will be fully realized, and that the Opposition will carry 40 to 45 of the 65 seats in this Province. In the City of Montreal the result is not doubtful. The only fear was complication arising out of new nominations. This has passed away. The fight will be a square one in three divisions,— Gough vs. Darling in the West, Ryan vs. Devlin in the centre, and Coursol rs. Archambeault in the East. The first named is the Opposition, and will be all returned. In Quebee West MeGreevy, the old Conservative, has been elected by ac- clamation. In the Centre, J. G. Ress, a wealthy and influential merchant, opposes Malouin with every prospect of success ; while Mr. Laurier has to fight for his seat against Mr. Malliere, a prominent Conser- vative. Sherbrooke and Laval return their old Conservative members—Mr. Brooks and Mr. Ouimet—by acclamation. Ina number of Counties the Government can- didates are put up to make a show of fight. Telegrams from Cardwell give assurance of the return of Mr. Thos. White, of the Montreal (razette, by a large majority. The outlook to-day is more promising than has been known since the campaign opened, and you may count with certainty on the old Province of Canada giving the Opposition 25 to 30 of a majority. If you do half your duty in the Maritime Prov- inces, there will bea clean sweep of the incapables on the 17th. Boston, Sept. 14. The latest returns from Maine show that the House of Representatives will have a majority of at least one in opposition to the Republicans, and the names of Garcelon and Smith will be sent to the Senate, which being Democratic will elect the latter. The standing on the joint ballot which elects State officials has not been determined. New York, Sept. 11. The yellow fever interments in Memphis yesterday reache d 99, and the physicians were too busy to report the number of new cases. Eighty deaths occurred in New Or- leans, and 200 new cases are reported. The mortality at Vicksburg is increasing, 90 deaths occurring during the last two days. There have been 38 deaths at Canton and 283 cases reported since the epidemic appeared. Thirty cases exist at Senatobia, and fever is on the increase at various other points in Mississippi. A New Orleans despatch reports that a cool N. W. wind sprung up last evening, with deadly effect upon the sick. The changing weather has given a new impetus to the fever. deo 22 Or Onty an Error or JupGmMent.—Hon. SYDNEY COAL. 70; REDUCTION IN PRICE! NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC! rAXHE GENERAL MINING ASSOCIA- TION (Limited) beg to intimate to the Public that the price of SYDNEY COAL has been Reduced to $2 per ton of 2240 Ibs., a price which it is hoped will place it within the reach of all consumers. The opening of the new winning at ‘‘ THE SYDNEY MINES” and the fact that the SYDNEY COAL now being shipped is all from the DEKP taken in connection with re- cent improvements in the process of screening, affords purchasers a positive guarantee of the very superior quality and condition of the SYDNEY COAL now offered for sale. It is a well-know fact that for many years past the prices of other Cape Breton coals have been regulated by the rates fixed for SYDNEY COAL; but while it is true that other coals, to get a sale at all, have been pressed on the market at various prices under the current rate of SYDNEY COAL, it is no less true that, taking into account the superior ang qualities of SYDNEY COAL when compare with other Cape Breton coals, the advantage, both as to economy and convenience, is in favor of SYDNEY COAL, even at a much higher price. The General Mining Association (Limited) regret that they should again have to caution the Public against the attempts being made from time to time to induce them to buy in- ferior coals purporting to be ‘‘ EQUAL TO SYDNEY,” ‘“‘SUPERIOR TO SYDNEY,” etc., etc., while some yet more unscrupulous vendors have not hesitated to advertise their coalas SYDNEY COAL (from some designated locality). All these efforts te sell coal by such means are only so many admissions on the part of those who make them of the sraNDARD character of SYDNEY COAL. lt has come to the knowledge of the Asso- ciation that in frequent instances parties giving ‘orders to truckmen and others tor SYDNEY COAL have been furnished with other and inferior coal. ‘he Public are cautioned against permitting themselves to be imposed apon in this way. Every vessei loaded at THE SYDNEY MINES is furnished witha certificate of the cargo being Sydney Coal. Parties purchasing should satisfy themselves by demanding the production of this certificate. The ‘‘ Sydney Coal” is registered under the laws of the Dominion, and unauthorized parties using the Trade Mark “SYDNEY COAL” are lable to prosecution. CUNARD & MORROW, Agents G. M, A., Halifax, N.S.
