Bat a Conundrum Finally Made Philip Get a Move On. The beautiful Miss Lydia Covyerton yawned for the thifd consecutive time. Not counting them consecutively, it was the two hundred and twenty eighth time. Still Philip de Smalpate stayed on. The maid (who would shortly—at least, on the morrow—be better dead than alive) had admitted him by mis- take for Jack Lightburn, and he was enjoying himself immensely. The fair Miss Lydia was getting well nigh desperate. She threw out hint aft- er hint and tapped the floor with her pointed shve till she thought she must be nearly through the sole of it. ‘*Why,’’ suddenly exclaimed her fond adorer, after one of those terrible pauses in the conversation that nearly kill ev- ery one but the one they ought to kill, ‘*why are you like the moon?’’ Miss Lydia saw her chance. Once successfully launched on conundrums, she felt sure that she could get rid of even Mr. de Smalpate. She therefore thought deeply for a moment or two, and then exclaimed with innocent sur- prise: ‘*Because any jackanapes that likes can sit and look at me all night.”’ ‘*No, no,’’ laughed Mr. de Smalpate uproariously. ‘‘Let me catch him!’’ ‘Perhaps, then, it is because there is not much chance for me to get any rest before dawn?’’ ““How absurd! What do you suppose will happen to those beautiful roses in your cheeks if you keep such hours?’’ Miss Lydia bit her lip with sufficient Vigor to suggest that possibly she thought it was her too fond adorer she had got hold of. ‘“‘Ah, I see I'll have to tell yon,’’ went on the infatuated De Smalpate softly. ‘*You’re like the moon because the earth's too’’— But Miss Lydia Coverton had risen tragically to her feet. ‘*Mr. de Smalpate,’’ she exclaimed, **do you know why your head’s like a broken clock?’’ “‘No—well, er—that is,’’ stammered he. ‘It’s because it’s got wheels in it, but won’t go.’’ And the next thing that Philip de Smalpate can remember after that is being cat on the cold, cold street and looking for about five minutes at a very bright electric light.—E. CASE, A Young Danghter of David McHardy, of Fergus, the Victim—Has suffered the Most {Intense Agony—Dactors Failed to Help Her, From the Fergus News Record. Nearly every person in this section is acquainted with Mr. David McHardy, the popular leader of St. Andrews church choir, Fergus. Our reporter called upon Mr. McHardy recently, and trom him and his ectimable wife a tale of terrible suffer ing was elicited, suffering that has brought a once strong and healthy child to the verge of the grave. The subject of the sketch, Lena McHardy, is fourteen years of age, and her parents say she has no’ grown any since her illness began some two yearsanda half ago. Her terrible suffering dates from the time she was vaccinated in June, 1994, and what she has since undergone has aroas- ed tue deepest sympathy of all the friends of the family. In conversation with Mr. McHardy and his wife, the follow- ing facts were elicited:—“Two years ayo last June,” sad the father, “Lena was vaccinated by the doctorin Fergus. The arm was very sore and swollea all sum- mer, and became so bad that it was a mass of sores from the shoulder to the elbow. In October 1894 a large lump appeared on her back, over one of her Jungs. The doctor who vaccinated her, treated her all toat suwmer, calling very frequently, but the medicine he gave her did no good and she was. growing weaker and weaker. When tne lump broke out on her back another doctor was consulted, who said she was in a very bad state of health. Her constitution appeared to be completely un- d+ rmined, and her appetite had completely failed. The last doctor called in gave sme Out applications, and Jauced the gahering, but it did not give’ the patient any benefit. Nine such gatherings have appeared since that time, but each broke and disappeared of its own accord, only bowever, to be followed by another. The child became very puny, and little or no food would remain on her stomach. At night ehe would fairly rave with the pain in the arm and back, and con- sequently her trouble was aggravated by a loss of sleep. She bad the best of attendance but to no avail, and skLe was slowly but surely sinking. Friends advised a treatment with Dr Wil- liams’ Pink Pills anil as a ‘act resoit they were tried. ‘To the surprise of bot parents and friends Lena began to improve soon after beginning the use of the pills. Her appetite returned, she became stronger and her general health much improved. The — sores hove not yet left her back and arm, but her constitution is being so very much improved under the treatment with Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills that ber parents aze looking for a complete cure. Mr. and Mrs. McHardy thank Pink Pills tor the present improved eond tion of their child a3 they have done her more good than the scores of bottles of doctor’s medicine which she took. Dr. Williams’ Pink Pills are a_ blood builder and verve restorer. They supply the blood with its life and health giving properties, tius driving disease trom the system. There are numerous pink colored imitations, against which the public is warned. South American Kidney Cure the Only Specific for Kidney Disease—A Liquid p ) q and Solvent— Ni ver Fa ls, Medical Science has proved beyond a doubt that the solid particles which pass through the kidneys in the ordinary course of circula ion-——and which in time so grind and wear these organs that they become diseased and wili not perform the functions for which they were created—require a solvent to dissolve aod eradicate frum the system these foreign substances, and the great South American Kidney Cure has proven to be the best and most scientific specific remedv for such, and the testi- mony of tuousands who have been cured by it when pilldoses have fail ie the best Cemonstration of the fact that a solvent must be administered.
