On August 31st, we left Spo- ocroesn 20. 21953 , Coast ;Fo Coast 0 FROM BRITISH COLUMBIA -ro rumors EDWARD ISLAND by luby Johnson Ind Men 1'. Tell (Part 1 of 2 parts) we bought I 1941 Chevrolet scdsn in April, 1953, and from ihat time a debate began. . . Could we? would we make the trip scroll the vast continent from Vancouver, 3. C., to Charlotte- town, P. E. L? The car was tested thoroughly- r.oo0 miles were added to the nhiesge and so after much discus- sion, about two weeks before our p,(peCf.ed departure to the East we decided that, at least we would start by car. We must admit neither of us were too sure, and muragc on some occasions was a bit dim. Our friends in Van- couver looked at us with various types of disgust, doubt. admir- siioii, amazement, and envy. Often. no felt like giving up the idea 1...: being stubborn, and probably due in the foot that we wanted to we the country. and keep our lli('l'., we finally departed from part Coquitlam, B. C. (the home of "The Johnsons") August 26. iim, st 7 o'clock, in the evening. We were given our final send- nir by Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and iii: and Mrs. Ritchings. Mr. Ritch- mgs, A friend of the Johnson fam- ily felt we needed a few tools, so he armed us with one axe, one shovel. and one tow chain . . all for good luck! As all farewells are difficult. this one was no ex- -eption for either of us. However xiter we had gone a few miles in thoughtful silence, we began to get excited and looked forward in our adventures with keen in- ierest. We went the first 100 miles to Hope. B. C., that night and stayed with Ruby's sister and hrother-in-law. Const. and Mrs Raymond Boisveri. 0 O 0 On August 27th, we started out --our trip had really begun and in spite of I downpour of rain our ipffffi certainly were not damp- ened. We travelled over the beauti- iiil Hope-Princeton Highway to Asoyoos, B. C., and crossed the border into Washington. On our way from Omsk. Wssh.. to the Grand Coulee Dam. we ran into a fresh fall of snow-we thought if this was the start of winter. we would need chains as well as a shovel. We saw the Grand vaulee Dam in all its mllhthllis and marvelled at such an achieve merit by man. Spokane, Wash. claimed us for our first stop. We stayed with cousins of Mary. Mr. and Mrs. Harry l-lennessey and family. Wt uero -entertained most royally- weing most of the city and some of the night life in Couer D'Alene. Idaho. just across the border from Spokane. We Know one bellicose dog who won't welcome the latest thing in aluminum: an electric dog-prod. Next time Towser rushes into battle, you can nonchslsntly kane, the day being very sunny and hot. Entering Idaho at Couer D'Aienc. we followed one of Am- erica's most beautiful lakes, Lake Couer D'Alene, for a few miles and then went on through Cedar Canyon. We stopped in Wall e. Idaho for lunch-a pretty mini g town but very drab surrounding country. Soon we were on our way agsin with Ruby at the con- trols. We passed from Idaho inic Montana through Lockout Pass elev. 4753 ft., and drove to Drum- mond, Mont. stayed there all night. We were in the heart of cowboy and cattle country! Com mon sights to travellers are the bobbing forms of bloating sheer Continued on page 14 "The Spud lliggin' Erounil" As I motor along I've a. fond look around At the huitling folk On the spud diggln' ground Not a furrow is turned, Not is plow is in sight- The combines are idle And as silent as night. Not a mortal astlr. Not a single one found Who is not already On the spud diggin' ground. The scholars hrlve left the Rural class rooms and hurried. Along with the teachers Who likewise have scurried, To where the sore muscles And the lame backs abound-- Out there with the crowd on The old spud diggln' ground. I searched and I searched for A good Person I know Until I exhausted All the places to go . . . You may not believe me, But I ran him aground Out doing his bit on The old spud diggin' ground A fumed politician- To be sure you have guessed He was picking away At'a pace with the rest., Sweet nostalgic mem'rics Sweep over my being And carry me back To the days I was seeing The hands of my time-plecc Creep so slowly around When I. too. joined the crowd On the spud diggin' ground. . -S.
