Corporate news - such as earn- ings. dividends and industry-wide developments - was probably a stronger influence during the week than at any time since United States intervention in Korea. Monday, alter the close of the market. General Motors announced a special dividend of 32.50 a share in addition to the usual 81.50. The next day GM. stock re- sponded to heavy demand which also affected other motor issues. Automobile shares continued to rise Wednesday. wavered on Thurs- day and dropped rather heavily Friday. ' Traders sized up the market this way: Business was booming now, would boom louder and longer !or the rest of the year. The tax collector's out was going up but profits were large enough not only to satisfy the demands of war but the cries of stockholders too. For the time being, at least. a lot of stocks looked good in rela- tion to the dividends they have been paying and were likely to pay for the rest cl 1960. Railway Ass'n Issues Statement MONTREAL. Mr. Brass said further that the Railway y Association of Canada will keep shippers and the public informed by advance notice of embaigoe on perishable and other tranic. completes Survey of Ragweed Situation A ten-day survey of the ragweed situation in Prince Edward Island has been completed by Mr. I. J. Basset. Division ol Botany and Plant Pathology. Ottawa. who re- ports that the percentage of the weed in this Province is much smaller than in other parts of Eastern Canada. However. in 20 of the 70 com- munities of the island visited by Mr. Basset small patches of tag- weed-both the great ragweed and common ragweed species were found. Most of the places where the weed was located were near railway tracts which, he explain- ed. was probably caused by in- coming shipments of feed grains carrying the seed. Proper control methods could rid the province completely of the menace to hay fever siifferers. Mr. Basset said. A single spraying of ragweed with 2, 4-D can eliminate the plant. A program to eliminate the weed in the Province is being formu- laied. There has been no trace of any ragweed plant found in Prince Edward Island's National Park. But the Science Division of the Federal Government has erected a ragweed pollen station atop Dalvay House to see if there is any sign of pollen being cerrid into the area by air currents. Ragweed plants are harmful to growing crops. They take up a great deal or space and cut down crop yields. They can also taint the- milk of cows. About 8096 of hay fever cases is caused by ragweed. The pollen is spread mostly between August 1 and September 30 and can be car- ried by the wind up to distances of 25 miles. The average untreat- ed patient, suffers from six to eight weeks. An attack begins like that of the common cold, with sneezing. itching, redness and put- iiness of the eyelids, and watery discharge from the eyes and nose. The attacks are repeated year af- ter year. Mr. Basset was accompanied on his tour of t-he Province by oiIic- ials of the Provincial Department of Agriculture. He visited centres from Tignish to Georgetown. He. leaves Charlottetown today ior Cape Breton to conduct a similar survey in that section of Nova Scolla. -5 WHY HAVE R; M sons we gear? 4-(HF GUARDIAN. CHARLOTTETOWN AUGUST 14. IE5!)
