Men like to rise in the world, but there are 'different kinds of elevation One is that which money gives Then, there is elevation which comes through social recognition But true elevation is of character and worth It can be obtained onlylby being dill gent We are not to wait\ idly for promotion, but are, to be busy at our lowlisr duty till the larger is ready for u Because Moses could not spend his time in idleness, but was faithful as a shepherd; and when God wanted him, he found him at his work Jesus found Peter, James, and John fishing. The way to make sure of being wanted for a greater work is to do well your plainer work Dill gence makes men ready to go up higher. Do well today's work, how.- ever lowly; perhaps tomorrow. God will have something larger for you. Longfellow has writtenz- LWICII The heights by great men reached and kept Were not attained by sudden flight: But they, while their companions slept, - Were toilingupward in the night. MOVES TO CHARLOTTE/I‘OWN. ' (From Yesterday’s Evening Guardian) 'Tis said that silence is golden, at this time the writer would declare it almost criminal, in as much as a few \vords from some one may, in a small measure, remove the strain of cruel silence, and black ingratitude from this whole community. For what? When a. few weeks ago, our most respected and leading citizen departed from the scene, of his childhood, his boyhood, his manhood, it may have been his wish, prompted by his hum- ility so. well known to everyone, that he should depart quietly and without demonstration,, for -certain the writer heard of his removal only the night previously, and Mr. John Bradley, the leading spirit, the prime mover in every demonstration to honor oth- ers whom he considered worthy of honor, the very soul so to speak. of Kelly’s Cross, for the past forty or more years, was allowed to go. (might we say?) "unwept, unhouored and unsung." _ ' Edmund Burke once deplored the passing of the age of Chivalry, and if he lived in this community he sould perforce be compelled to re- gret the departure of gratitude and appreciation of genuine worth. But this is only apparent. If any young man of this parish reflected credit on his parents or his native place, the sublect of this article was_the man to plan 3, public appreciation of his endeavors. In fact no one else seemed to be alive to the need of such public approval, almost laugh at such dis- plays. But is is most profitable that such little displays as these in honoring moral worth and earnest endeavor on the part of our cltl'/.cus in the past may have been e. grand stimulus for others to follow in the same lines. Suffice to say, that this parish has produced along list of prominent 'men in every walk of life and in various parts of tha world. all of whom in their day, received honor and encouragement, publicly and privately from Mr. Bradley. These young men are not today pre- sent to reciprocate that honor given them, and it can easily be accounted for why Mr. Bradley received no such public honor. But, believe me dear reader, asl said before this dearth of gratitude is but apparent, and every rnan, woman, and child in this community regrets, with a most gen- uine regret the departure of our dear friend from_ the spot on earth most dear to him and us. There must _ be some truth in the saying that the “poet is not honored in his own country’-’ for certainly John Bradley is a poet of no mean order, and we hope to ses his inimitable funny and otherwise poems collated in book form at no distant date. Since Char lottetown is henceforth to have the honor of having Mr. Bradley as a resident, and we must »make the best of it without him, let us hope that he may live long and ‘happily, and think of us all occasionally, includ- ing,-M.
