I Since we last laboured over these lines, UPEI fortunes have been mixed. ' In hockey we won one, really big, dropped an unfortunate one and lost a decision that makes our boys travel. to Halifax for a game we don't feel we should have’to play. Our basketball teams, male and female, each garnered ' wins in impressive ‘ fashion. The hockey Panthers dropped one in Sackville 5-1' to rival .Mt. A. as both teams are , struggling for the _ .divisional lead. ,We, and a whole lot of other \ Panther fans had intended to travel to this game ‘ but the ground drift and blowing snow made such a trip seen foolish. From all accounts it was a good game to miss.- On Sunday, back home on Forum ice our boys over— whelmed highly rated ‘ Acadia (who had trimmed Mt. A. the day before in Sackville 6-5) by a 10-1 score-.. and to a spectator the games didn't seen that .close. Trevor Crawford and 'Callie ‘MacPhail made .it 2—0 in , . the first but in the first eightminutes of the seCond we think the team reached a standard of play unmatched by any previous Panther squad. Callie MacPhail,‘ Gary Trainor, Norman Beck, Bob MacDonald, Bob Hicks, and Mike 'Ready all scored, it seemed almost at i will, as the befuddled ’ Axenen defense seemed unable to, cope with their terrific speed and skill. Trevor Crawford and Callie MacPhail added a couple in the third and Acadia broke Avalino Genez ' goose egg late in the game: The team travels ‘ next Tuesday for a renatch of the SMU game which was rubbed out last month after the SMU minor I S 'fiflyflthI-lhhronflicwa 1 elm-mild steaks and burgers .KéMART PLAZA L Pu- 2-3073 ‘2-3075 1 wi».’,9.t c. -.._......‘.... First, however, the scene shifts to Fredericton on Friday . and Saturday as we take on St. Thomas and UNB. in two games that should decide the league leader- ship. We wonder if fans have noticed the greatly improved performance of Brian O'Stroski in_reCent games. The big reason is thatsince .Dr. Ron Collins has taken , over the responsibility of counting the S.O.G. 's (a job that, executivelike he imnediately turned over to son Mike) the genial Doc. has been coaching Brian from the pressbox giving such pertinent and interesting information . as the score, the period, has greatly affected . Brian ' 5 concentration and, we are sure, he is ' appreciative . ‘ Graduating Sue Betts and Cathy Chandler made their final home ‘ appearance a big one as they led the Lady Panthers to a 78-54 triumph over the visitinth. A. girls. Cathy's shooting was amazing as she scored 10 of 12‘from the floor, some on shots from outside and that, without using a pocket computer, seems like 83%.” She alsohad 8 out of 8 from the foul line and that‘s 100%! One of theSe days we'll unwi- ttingly hurt a Panther - (male) by saying he shoots as well as Cathy Chandler but we'll be intending it as a compliment! Departing Sue Also had a terrific game as she scored 20 , points, 16 in the second j half. The team is now 6-7 and play their final ' game in Fredericton on Saturday. - . The charging basket- ball Panthers grabbed 3 spot in the league standings as they walloped Dave Nutbrown use his Mt. A. by a 105-72 score in a game which saw happy bench extensively. This team seems to improve greatly every time out and, we feel, has an .even chance against any team in this, the . strongest league in the country. .The return of Billy Redn'ond and the outstanding shooting of Curtis Brown makes it difficult for an opposing defense to concentrate on Chris Sumner. In this game Chris led our boys with 26 and Curtis had 25. Chris also exhibited new skills, as he made Dal. JOCK TALK gym on. its feet. had thought the two games in Fredericton crucial for playoff ' participation but we think we'll also beat out St. who, already trailing us, have to play ' mo against undefeated SMU and second place Let's beat UNB in two this weekend and end the suspense. Weekend travel to Fredericton will be heavy as the hockey Panthers play two, the lady Panthers one and the Basketball Panthers tm.
