Whereupon the Board expressed its opinion, that as the Revenue Law of the Island does not empower the Executive Government to suspend its operation in any articular, the Board regrets its inability to advise His’ ste to comply with the prayer of the Memorial- ists. More especially as the power which His Excel- lency is now called upon to exercise, has been refused, by the rejection ofa Billin the House of Assembly passsed by the Legislative Council in the Session of 1846, conferring on the Lieutenant Governor in Council the power “to suspend the duties upon the importation of all Bread stuffs and provisions,” in cases of urgent neces- ‘sity.
