A SCIENT FIC METHOD OF TRZATIN THE WASTES OF CITIES. The Important Work of Cultivatin Microbes for the Destruction of the Noxious Properties of Organic Bodies. An ingenious as well as scientil< method of treating sewage is now being fully tested in England. The syst«m, which is the invention of Mr. Scoti-Muo orieff, seeks to enlist on the side of seware purification those forces in nature w hich possess vital energy, and which an, re- presented in this instance by the gener- ally abhorred army of microbes. Du claux teaches us but for these minut: creatures, mankind would long ago have perehed from the face of the earth. Unquestionably there are mi- crobes which possess the power of p.o pagating a direful class of diseases. But these creatures are comparatively rare, and the microbes which are beneficia! serve to destroy them. The nonpatho- genic or harmiess bacteria are not ouly antagonistic to those that are hurtful. but are specially valuable as ‘‘nature’> rCavengers.” In arecent report on the systera by Alexander ©. Houston, of Eilin burgh, quoted by London Engineer, the part played by the hquefying organisms 1s descri! ed as sufliciently obvious. They roduce in their growth substances capa le of as organic matter, and 60 are able directly or indirectly to effect the breaking up of the complex organic bodies constituting sewage into thei: simple elements. The liquefying bacteria ractically feed or the sewage, the effec ing to prepare the material, by a pro- cess resembling that of digestion, for its final disintegration. DETAILS OF THE SYSTEM. Recognizing these principles Mr. Scott-Moncrieff has so applied them as to constitute a plan for the bacteriologi- cal treatment of sewage. The main fea- ture of the apparatus is that of a filter bed ; but this is intended to act also in the cultivation of the microbes, and is, therefore, a ‘‘cultivation filter-led.” The operation, so far as present informa- tion extends, is limitedto the treatment of the sewage from a single house, though fresh materiale {or investigations are now coming to hand from a town where the ‘‘cultivation filter-beds” are atwork. These later facts will be pub- lished as soon as possibile. Dr. Houston specifies the results which have been abtained on & smaller scale at Ashstead. Tha Ashstead filter-bed is simply 10 feet in length, by 2} feet in width, and 3 feet in depth. This re- ceives the entire sewage discharge from a household of 10 or 12 persons, with the exeeption of the grease, which is held back as far as possible by a grease trap. The filtration is upward, the liquid rising through a false bottom, and then pass- ing through successive layers of Aint, e and gravel, tili it reaches tie level of the outflow pipe. The depth of the filtering motniel is only abont 14 eB. It might be expected that so small a filter would soon become choked, and that a nuisance would be created. But Dr. Houston states that the reverse of this happens, the effluent up toa certain point actually improving in quality «as time goes on, and the whole process continuing to work satisfactorily and un- interruptedly for months together, Hence it is argued that, inaswiuch as the solid matters disappear, the process must be ee more than one of mere mechanical filtration, The explanation is given by attributing the result to the beneficial action of nonpathogenic micro-organisms, which peptonize the organic matter in the sewage, aud so bring about its purification. PRACTICAL RESULTS OF IMPORTANCE, Recently a nitrifying channel,80 feet in length, was started, and was filled with coke down to within the last 8 feet, where coarse gravel took its place, The contents of the filter-bed were also moderately heated by means of ct water pipes. As had been anticipated, the effluent was greatly improved in quality, and became remarkably clear. All the experiments possess a certain scientific value, and may be expected to yield practical zesults of importance as affecting isolated houses, or small ear of dwellings. The system may and by be worked ona small scale, r. Scott-Moncrieff is throwing great light on a recondite part of the sewage question, and is thereby rendering a public service. From the small begin- ning, having the nucleus of truth a great advance may be made in course of time. Dr. Charcot's Life. Prof. Charcot, tie celebrated special- ist in mental and nervous diseases, of the Salpetriere hospital, whose death has been announced, was one of the mest notable figures in Paris. Of a cast of features which recalled the first Napo- leon, he was extremely quiet in manne and sententious in 6 h. Having been appointed to the Salpetriere in 1862, he stuck to it to the last, and transformed what was once a huge poorhouse for fe- male ivcurables into a hospital and school, where the most brilliant dis- coveries and the most patient and ex- haustive researciies have been made under his direction in the pathology and treatment of nervous diseases. Charcot married arich wife, and lived in a Jendid mansion in the Boulevard St. ermain., The house is full of fine old tapestries, and profusely decorated with enamels, inlaid :vories, painted tiles and repousse meta!, the work of his wife and daughters. Charcot himself was no mean artist, and lis vessert service war ornamented with paintings of a serio- comic character, taken from his tourist sketch book, Although patients went from all parts of the world to consult the fessor, he reserved three days a week orstudy and research. Many of his students have attained high positions im their profession. He was born in Paris in 1825. Apropos vf an article, by Tol stoi, Dr. Charcut wrote a couple of years ago: “Alcohol and tobacco are injuri ous, but they can be uged.in modera- tion.” ot Suicide Statistics.
