Cap ta Irving was widely known as, for many years, one of the principal contrac- tors for the winter service between Capea Traverse and Tormentine. We need not say that. by whomsoever known, he was respected as an exceedingly skilful man in regard to his important and difftcult oceu- pation. To his ekill he added a ready courtesy which gained him personal friends in all parts of Canada. He has lived in retirement for several years; but he has not been forgotten; and his memory will be cherished in years to come as one who,in his generation, performed, success- a hazardous eer- fully and satisfactorily, vice fur the public —Sunshine and shower and genial air have in the past week alternated and combined to the great good of the crops. An unusually heavy coop of hay is now all but assured, and the grain and root crops are growing famously in all but the flat and heavy lands which hold the water With good prospects for the future, there are aleo, for those farmers who still have grain and potatoes to sell, good prices in the present. Within the past week the price of pocatoes has jumped in Charlottetown from 22 to 24 cents per bushel to 43 to 45 cents, while oats are firm at 39 to 40 cents. Eggs are, however, still too low io be sold except at a loss, the price being only 6 ¢ents per dozen. Wool, also, is flat in this city at 17 cents (cash) and 20 cents (trade) per pound. At Summerside 22 to 234 cents (trade) have been given for woo! within the past * eek. As to pork—there is none moving here, our buyers’ season being over. Chicago pork sells at $11.85 to $12.02; in St. John the price ranges from $14 to $16.50, according to quality; and at Mon‘real the price paid is from $17 to $1 3.50. eee PERSONAL. —_— Chief Engineer Large arrivel home from Montreal! last evening. In the House of Commons, yesterday, on motion to go into committee of Ways and Means, tne adjourned debate on Mr. Charlton’s motion respecting the North- west lands was resumed. Hon. Mr. Daly spoke upto recess, making a powerful defence of the Government’s land policy anda very crushing exposure of the in- consistency between grit professions now and their practice when in power. He also contrasted the land policies of the two parties and the results achieved, and pointed out the superiority ef the land policy of Canada over the lend policy of the United States to which Mr. Charlton was continually referring. Hon. Mr. Daly was followed by Messra. Martin, Davin, and Mills, of Bothwell. The House divided at one o’clock, when Mr. Charlton’s amendment was defeated, the vote being AZ yeas, 100 nays. Mr. Gill es gives notice of the following enquiry of the Ministery in the negotia- tion with Mr. Huddart and others toyching any possible port in Canada to be selected asaterminus for Atlantic Service, were the Government influenced by the fact that a special committee of the House of Commons in the session of 1874, appointed for the purpose of enquiry into the best and most direct route for the conveyance of passengers and mails between the Do- minion of Canada and Europe, and of finding on the shores of the Dominion a harbor accessible both in winter and sum- mer to the terminus of such _ shortest route reported to the House of Commons that the harbor of Louisburg, Cape Breton, was always accessible, commodious and safe, and nearer Europe by several hov-s than any other port in Canada. Hor. Mr. Tupper gives notice of a reso- lution giving the Government power to collect inspection fees from steam boats. This has been found necessary in crder to settle doubts that have arisen about the validity of the present inspection fees. Of to Ottawa. Sr. Jony, June 8.
