' DOROTHY DIX i "k DEAR MISS DIX: My husband has been a respectable, business- ; h e and dignified man all of his life until now when, at the ago of 50. , a has completely changed. He neglects the good business he has built l "D. i-Ia is takins all kinda of music lessons and is tha laughing stock of U10 Mllhborhood, singing at the top of his voice. He has a regular beauty parlor of his own and spends hours trying to beautify himself and grow hair on his bald head and takes all kinds of reducing tablets He tries to chum with boys and girls of ; 16 and brags that he is in younger condition than any boy of 2O or 30. ' H’ ll “WHY! quarrellng with his own children and making presents to young girls. My nerves are shattered and I am too ashamed to meet my friends. Is there any cure for him’: MRS. C. ANSWER: Oh. yes. A certain cure. Time. He ls just going through tha age of folly that afflicts a great many other men at his time of i life and, if you will just be patient, he will soon get over it. ! It is just the last flare-up of youth, a last call to the dining car, but while it lasts many men do tragic things, such as imagining they are too young for their wives and that they have fallen in love with flappers. While they are under this delusion, they often break up their homes and ldlvorca their wives and marry girls young enough to be their grand- daughters only to repent it ever afterward. Summon what sénse of humor you can to understanding tha situa- tion and be thankful that it is no worse. ‘ DOROTHY DIX DEAR MISS DIX: I was spanking my 9-year-old daughter tho other day when an “unmannerly" neighbor came into the room unannounced. She said that she was afraid that the other mothers in the neighbor- hood would not want their children to play with a girl who had to be punished so severely. I told her the child had done nothing vary naughty, but that I believe in Solomon's motto, "Spare tha rod and spoil the child." What do you think of corporal punishment‘! ANXIOUS AND WORRIED MOTHER ANSWER: I have too often seen a peevlsh, fretful child who was making life a torment for everybody about it turned into a sweet and smiling angel by judicious use of the halrbrush, not to subscribe to the spanking theory when it is put in operation at the psychological moment by the humane mother. Before a child is old enough to reason, it has to be controlled by force. but there should be some way of appealing to a girl of 9 by other means than a beating. You should rule your children through love and respect. There ls only a short time in which they will be afraid of you. and if your hold upon them is fear, you can do nothing with them when that is gone.
