ssitsrouv viuvr or ‘I'll! unitn sun rsousrsca Our attention has been frequently di- rected by corros ndeots to the question of“ allowing the board to grow for the purpouo of health.”-—Some have directed our attention to a recent article on the subject which appeared in “ Diclions’ Household words," had one has been so kind as to send us the said article cut from one of our coteinporaries, with a few of his own retiiarks appended, approving of wearing the beard and moustache in all their glory. We have no doubt but the moustache and beard will be universally worn by our people in the course of four years from the present datc;vve thus judge from the great number who wear them now, in our city, in comparison with the number who displayed them five years ago. None but foreigners wore them then, now they are worn by one- eighth of our male population. The masons and millers in the cities of Liverpool, Edinburgh, and Glasgow have adopted the moustache as a health perscr- vative, and during the past winter the en- gineers and others employed on the Scott- ish Central Railroad wore the beard by the recommendation of Dr. Simpson, and have addressed a letter to their Superin- tendent, describing the benefits they de- rived from such a habit, and recommen- ded its general adoption by all those in similar occupations. Ten minutes of time spent in shaving every day amounts to one hour and ten minutes every week, or nearly 2; days in one year. If in this city there are 60,000 men whe each consume this time yearly in shaving, it amounts in the aggregate to l50,000 days in one year, all of which would be saved by wearing the beard.—- But what is to become of barbers and Slieflield razors? There is nothing, we admit, that would so readily reconcile any man to the inconvenience of an upper lip ornament as a bad razor. If the beard conduces to health then it should never be shaved. Clergymen, above all their clas- ses, we believe, would be gainers by wear- ing the heard, it would in many cases pre- vent bronchitis ,a disease with which they are peculiarly afliicted; they, however, ‘ will be the last to adopt the wisker, as they are so conspicuously shaven and slinrn. Among the Anglo-saxoii race the beard was universally worn in the days of Shakspeare, and even old John Bunyan displayed the moustache. Fash- ions in dress‘ and wearing the hair in vari- ous modes, revolve in circles, and now the reign of the beard has begun. TI-II: Misan.--Of all the creatures up- on earth none is so miserable as the ini- ser. It is not impossible that the profit- gate may have a friend. for there is usually left about him some touch of litiinanity— some one unbroken cord of the finer feel- ings of our nature; but the miser meets with no sympathy. Even the nurse who is hired to attend him in his latest hours, loathes the ghastly occupation. and longs for the moment of her release: for al- though the death's damp is already ga- thering upon his brow, the thoughts ofthe departing sinner are still upon his gold, and at the mere jingle of a key, he starts from his torpor, in a paroxism of terror, lest a surreptitious attempt is being made upon the sanctity of his strong box. Tlioroaro no prayers of the orphan or widow for him—not a solitary voice has ever breathed his name in heaven as a benefactor. One poor penny given away in _the spirit of charity would now be worth more to him then all the gold that the world ‘contains: but notwithstanding that he was a church-going man, and fsmilar from his youth with those awful texts in which the worship of mammon is de- nounced, and the punishment of Dives told, he has never yet been able to di- vorce himself from his solitary love of lust, or to part with one atom of his pelf. An so from a miserable life detested and do- spisod he passes into a dresr eternity ; and those whom he has neglected or mis- used make merry with the boards of the rniserl The ladies of South America, during the hot weather of july, wear cabbage- loaves bonnots, trimmed with radislies.
