New York Stocks NEW YORK -(AP)-The stock market last week maintained I record-breaking pace that shoved it toward the fateful all-time peak of 1920. For the last 11 months the mar- ket has been climbing at a dizzy pace seldom interrupted by a re- action. In mid-year it got up to the old levels of 1929. the October days when the stock market was in con- vulsions that only ended with the deep depression in 1932. Last week it was poised around the highest point in 25 years when it recessed for election day. The clcction results touched off a head- long rise that hasn't been matched since the troubled days before the start of the Second World War. Brokers feel the election is not the sole cause for the current surge although Wall street on the morning after the election con- cludcd that the Republicans had done much better than expected. That triggered buying in ii-big IVBVE. British Socialists Okay Paris Pact By BORIS KIDEL PARIS (Reuters)-French Social- ists overwhelmingly decided to sup- port ratification of the German re- armament treaties Thursday as a necessary preliminary to fresh East-West negotiations. The Socialist decision at a speciai national party congress virtually assured French ratification of the Paris treaties before the end of the year. The ,main block to ratification now lies in Bonn where Chancellor Konrad Adenauer has encountered heavy opposition to his agreement with P r e m i e r Pierre Mendes- France on internationalizing the Saar. However. Adenauer Thurs- day predicted West German rail- fication by mid-January. The French Socialist congress voted 2.817 to 454 with 93 absten-' tions in favor of the agreements signed in Paris last month to grant West Germany sovereignty. a 500.000-man army and member- ship in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This means most if not all of the 104 Socialist depu- ties in the assembly will vote for ratification. ATTLEE TRIUMPHS In London, full bipartisan lup- port for the British government's policies on West German rear- mament was assured when Labor party leader Clement Attiee gained an almost two-to-one vote from La- bor memhers of Parliament in fa- vor of ratifying the Paris treaties. It was a major triumph for At- tlee. The vote put an end to a bit- ler dispute within the Labor party and constituted a strong rebuff to Aneurin Bevan and his left-wing- ers. The Labor MP5 voted 124 to 72. with about 100 Labor members of Parliament abstaining, in favor of ihe Paris agreements. Under these accords a rearmed West Germany will be brought into the Western European Union and the Atlantic pact. Thursday's vote is even more significant when measured against the last vote of the parliamentary Labor party in February. The bal- loting then showed 113 in favor of German rearmamentand 104 against. a msjorit of only nine for the party lead 3. The meeting Thursday also de- cisively defeated. by a vote of 115 to 82, a proposal that the party seek new four-power talks in Ger- man reunification before the new treaties come into orzation.
