They are par- ticularly applicable at thie juncture, when the Liberai party isatthe beginning ofa new campsign. Now, if ever, the motto, “ Alter Your Course,” vught to be adopted jaud acted upon. The interests of the country demand that the Liberal party ia office shall alter its course. To continue toadd to the public expenditures at the rate of seven or eight millions of dellars a year, to continue to heap up the public debt—during a period of great prosperity —at the rate of three or four millious of dollars ayear, to break promises and , corrupt constituencies, to add scandal to ecandal as in the Yukon,--surely this is the course of lunatics in office, only to be accounted for upon the theory that “ those whom the gods wish to destroy they first make mad.” We note, not without great pleasure, that some of the pewspaper exponente of Liberaliem and Independence, throughout the country, are already acting in accordance with the motto set up by the | gentleman at Georgetown. There ie, for in- stance, the Huntington Gleaner which sup- ported the Liberalsin the general election and has since repeatedly called upon the Government to’alter its course. There is the Bobcaygen Independent which publicly rejoiced over the defeat of the Conservatives in 1896 and which said recently,—the bare facts stands ovt plain that the Liberal party when in opposition promised a re- duction in taxation, and they have increas- ed it; they proniseda@ reduction in ex- HOUSEKEEPERS To come in and look over oiif ¢| croceries Our stock is fine I « and fresh and guaranteed to be satisfactory. Tue excitement in connection with this celebrated case has been well maintained. M. Labori’s application for the evidence of ! Colonel Schwartzkoppen and Col. Paniz- zardi is the latest sensation. It is stated Emperor William and King Humbert to permit these officers to come to Rennes and give their testimony, The appeale, we are told, were couched,in eloquent terma® invoking the assistance of their majesties in the name of justice aod humanity. It is fully expected that the desired permis- sion will be granted and that the truth of the matter will soon be koown beyond ¢ e peradventure of a doubt, The teetimony so far obtained goes to show Henry and Esterhazy committed forgeries to protect themeelves and main- tain the sentenee of Dreyfus, Perjury also was resorted to. Henry confessed his crimeand committed suicide, Ester. hazy has also coufeseed his crime, and has been driven out of the army and into exile. The civil government was at firat convinced of the guilt of Dreyfus, and added to imprisonmeat torture of the most terrible kind—torture of body with fester- ing irons, and torture of soul by lies about his wife’s fidelity. Now the civil govern~ ment has discovered its mistake, and is ready to do justice. But the chiefs of the army are in rebellion, and are determined that the conviction shall stand. The generals even deny the facis as confessed and proved. The question is, ehall law and justice prevail or shali the army control the Re- public, and rule superiorto the law? In the latter case the French nation is again at the brink of revolution. “CREDIT TO WHOM CREDIT.” ae The Sydney corres pondent of the Halifax Herald asked Senator McDonald to state in what way the condition of Cape Bre- ton, with its preseat immense coal in« dustries and coming steel industries, differ- ed from that of twenty years ago, The Senator answered: ‘Twenty years ago the people were dis- couraged. The were no markets for their produce, ne work at the mines, no railway connected the island with the con- tinent, many young men and wom- en were going away to the Unit- ed States. But when the duty was put on coal the mines increased their output, there was work, and as a conse- quence a market at home was made for the produce of the farm.
