Tue Darty EXAMINER. is MAY 7, 1883. Summer Vom imunication. Tur will never 1 While the steamer p ying between Summer side and Shediae is every day loaded down to the gupwale with trei oht, and the air of the gungways and saloons stinks of the ex- crements of horses. cattle, sheep and pigs. | which are being exported, passengers tor the Island are compelled to wait at Point du Chene for four hours day after day. and the mails, often, do arrive ia Charlottetown until one or two o'clock in the morning. This is not comfortable accommo- dation. This is not “continuous com- minication.” This, if persisted in, will spoil the pleasure of summer tourists aud destroy the summer tratlic in passevgers. This is pot fair to our men of business, who have daily correspondence with the three or not Contivent. This will uever do. The idea of passengers having to lounge about Poivt du Chene and Pictou for hours waiting for steamer and train is utterly repegoan t to the spirit of the age. Go-ahead Yankees and live Causiians won't do it; aud so they won't come here —oronly iu very much reduced numbers. Then consider the incovvevience to our mea of business. The mails arrive alter midvight; the letters can't be touched till wext morpving; consequently they can't be answered by the mail of that day; and so the merchant has to wait until the day followiug; and is compelled to telegraph at exorbitant rates or sufer losees amouutiug to perhaps hundreds of | dollars. i We won't speak of the smells. The | subject is too disagreeable. Now, we shall vot bame the Steam Navigation Company. Indeed, we are glad that the freight offers, for it brings not only profit to the Company but pros- perity to the country; and it should certainly be carried. Nor, shall we just “yet blame the Government; for they are not, perhaps, fuliy coguizant of “the situation.” Butif better accommodation is dat soou provided great blame will be at the doors of both. The Continental mails should reach Chariottetown net later than seven o'clock every evening—-they might be in by six or a quarter past six—and thus the traders ot the Provi inte would be enabled to correspond promptly with their tellows in the distant Provinces and the United States, while the unspeakable delays would be avo.ded. An additional steamer is wanted. The subsidy should be increased to enable the Company to put on a boat specially fir the carriage of mails and passeugers and such light freight that may not emit noxious odors. On behalf of the public we call the attention of the Company, our Repre- sentatives at Ottawa, and the Govern- meat to this important matter, in the hope that the change suggested will, as soon as possible, be effected. As this Institution is probably the most im- portant School of Medicine in the Do- mivion of Canada it is only proper that allusion should be made to these changes in our columns. The Rev. Dr. Wright. who for more than thirty years lectured op Materia Medica, has resigned and the faculty have recommeuded Dr.James Stewart, of Brucefield, Oxtario, an alumnus of the University, to the Chair Dr. McCallum, Professor of Midwifery aud diseases of women and children, has | also resigned, owing to press of pro fessional oa mgsteregh 7 his chair has been divided into ove of Midwifery aud diseases of jofants an a one of gyn wecolo; gy | or diseases of women. Dr. A. A Bri wo | who has been Dr. McCallum’s assistant for the past four or five years, will | lecture on the former subject, and Dr. | Gardner, Professor of Jurispradence and Hygiene, on the latter. Dr. Gardner, | who is of Montreal’s ablest phy- sicieus, has given up geveral practice to devote himself entirely to this speciality. | Dr. Wi! late of C illege, ; Montreal, has been appointed to lecture | on Jurisprudence, and Dr. McDonnell on Hygiene. These results are merely the outgrowth of the action taken by the Primary students during last session. A correspondence has been 11 progress between Lord Derby and Mr. Frelinghnysea with respect to the isthmus canal and the Claytou-Balwer treaty, and the former quotes a despatch from Secretary of State, John M, Clayton, dated July 4, 1850, settling the point iu dispute in the most em- phatic manner. Of the existence of this document it is quite clear that Secretary Fretinghusen was unaware. Nor is this to be wendered at.
