rolllll IN THE FOIUM in calling the Potato Meeting of 5.ptember 29th, the Federation was inspired by the very reasonable motive of bringing to those inter- gated, information on both sides of . very controversial question. In a democratic society. people in continua daced with the ne- msity of ms his decisions. In or- der that I reasontd conclusion mgy he arrived nt, it is necessary that information be given and weighed on its merits. When. at my time. action is taken to sup- press information. then the foun- dstion and structure of democracy is in peril. it was obvious that in this meetln . certain elements had de- ddod at the free giving of in- formation was not to be permitted. these tactics helped to produce the desired reaction. but undoubtedly .1so produced a marked lowerng of prestige for the victors. The Federation, seeking to act in an impartial way. gave equal privileges to both supporters and opponents. The general public was welcome at the meeting, welcome as spectators. but in many cases behaved in a manner ill befitting guests. Federation policy has been to hold meetings which are gen- erally open to the public and pro- vide an opportunity for free ex- pression of opinion; it would in- dccd be unfortunate. if as a re- sult of past experience. this pol- try had to be abandoned. Viewed from any angle the meeting was a sorry demonstra- tion - not from the standpoint of the decision - but as a demon- stration of democracy in action. Freedom And Compulsion There has probably been more writing and talking in the demo- cratic world on the subject of freedom than upon any other topic. lMost thinking eople realize that individual free om only exists to an extent permitted by what is , considered to be in the general in- iterests of society. Possibly Adam Among The Farmers (Federation of Agriculture News)- dividtlaiwas compelled to conduct himself in a. manner decided by his fellows within reasonable bounds. Many persons confuse freedtlsln with licence. No individual has e right to expect. or may. behave in a manner ininolcsl to society; society protects itself. The present controversy in the potato cusstlon centres around the word "ooulaulelcn” a term which Idlnltl-idly finds little favour with so one. Democracy is based on the til i- of the msloslt to decide. that decision must aways be ac- cepted or anarchy rapidly follows. IIOUNTIES The recent-announcement that bountlec are now payable on skunks. foxes end reccoon. will be read with satisfaction, particularly by those who are suffering from the depredations of the latter sni- mal. One farmer suggested to us that there should be a much high- er bountry on raccoons than on form. His argument ran as fol- lows: Foxes do steal the occasional hen or -chicken. bift. are easily kept out of poultry houses and don't damage crops in any way. The rac- coon on the other hand is very determined in breaking his way into the poultry house and once inside kills for pleasure. In addition these animals do a great amount of dam- age to grain crops and can ruin oorn. and in particular have a strong liking for sweet corn. Only those who have seen it can credit the damage that the coon does in a com field: stalks are pulled down and ears ripped open in almost unbelievable numbers. In portions of Kings County the rec- coon has earned himself the repute- tion of the most destructive wild animal afoot. NOVEMBER 10, 1954 It now appears to be a foregone conclusion that on the above date. Prince Edward Island potato grow- ers will have a momentous decla- lon to make in marketing ballot. It is not our intontion to suggest i was the only truly free man that ever lived and he lost is portion of his freedom with the advent of Eve. The farmer who satisfies himself after careful study that a. central selling agency and pooling are not in the general interest should not hesitate to vote "No." If, on the other hand. he feels reasonably sure that such an experiment has a reasonable possibility of success than his conscience can rest at ease in makihs an affirmative decili- ion. 0 nus callou- In tho early were of this cen- tury farm mortgages were -a pre- ferred investment for most in- dividuals who had been. fortunate enough to accumulate substantial savings for investment. During re- cent years however. savings have flowed into government bonds and public utilities. and farms are no longer looked upon. with favour as a mortgage proposition. The presen state of agriculture and high capital investment involv- ad required. in many cases. is: greator amounts of borrowed eapltgl than would have been dreamed poa- stble twenty years ago. over Ix- tevnaion of credit can be bad for both lender and borrower but, any unnecessary restriction of credit can be a serious handicap to agricul- ture and remit in a contracting rather than an expanding economy. The drying up of mortgage land- ing on farms may well be no at the reasons why many fa a re either vacant or are not purchased by new operators. t J saatiur. ueltlll" an sea is l 'WelIIs shut the same as e puke! . ea ......... ...... . s - - - - - " DEW WCIIC” huitly larger. .).fronsiefor Ill" N W ' "W Ieniflt 0"” ".0. l October stir. ms. FUNERAL YESTERDAY - The funeral of Dr. James G. Mccabe (formerly of Kiiikora) who died recently in Somerville, Mass, was held yesterday morning from The 1-fenneasey Funeral Home to St. Dunstan's Basilica. where Solemn Requiem High Mass was celebrat- iong soft body made up of 18 see- ticlu. each section like an inflat- ed automobile tire. inside he is all stomach except for the three small sections right behind the head. Each of these sections be- hind the dome has a pair of real legs which correspond to the three pairs of legs on a butterfly. Per- haps the most amusing thing a- bout a caterpillar is that one can't tell the head from the tail. One of the oddest facts about the shark la that while it often at- tacks white people. it hardly ev- er bdthers a colored person. Fishermen who lived in Biblical days must often have harpooned the shark for in the Old Testa- ment Job tells of harpoonlng a sea creature in these words: ”Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons. or his head with: fish-spears." There are about 070.000 species of insects. 250,000 species of fishes. and (.000 species of mammals. Among mammals. only the eohinda and the duck-billed piety- pus lay eggs. 0 C Hardly a year passes that some prophet does not sit back and a- wait the world's end. The latest to come to my attention is 77-year- old W..A. Nicholson, of Alcs, Ten- nessee. Nicholson expects that dreadful event to take place early in 1959. so. in order to be prepared for it. he has made himself a sturdy home. But why should he need a home if the world crashes? Well, the way prophet Nicholson sees it only 114,000 gsi-fearing persons will be saved. He expects to be among the saved and that, in- cidentally. is why his Tennessee home contains 1.000 tons of stone and marble and is encircled by a 700-foot long fence made of the same material. The house itself is 36 x 52 feet and has walls between 25 and 30 feet thick. Looks like Nicholson is depend- ing on his sturdy home to save him in the day of judgment rather than onihis good deeds. Did you know that all insects ed by Rev. John A. Sullivan. Dea- con and sub-deacon were Rev. Francis Corcoran and Rev. Clar- ence Roche. Present in the sanc- tuary were Rt. Rev. Monsignor P. McMahon, D.D., Very Reverend J. Gregory Murphy. C.Ss.R., Rev. Owen Klggins, Rev. H. J. Croken, Rev. .1. W. Mccardle, Rev. W. J. Keefe and Rev. E. J. Roche. As- sisting in the choir were Rev. Bernard Gillis, D.D., Rev. law- rence Lanclrigan and Rev. James Kelly. Pall-bearers were: Justin Smith, Raymond Smith. Jack Mulligan, Bernard lticcabc, all nephews of the deceased, and .1. Frank Maolvlillan and Henry J. MacDonald, former classmates. In- terment was in the Catholic cem- etcry. The funeral was very large- ly attended.
