DUTY FIRST AND PLEASURE AFTERWARDS, A gentleman had a little pet-dog that alwavs came the moment he was ealled. . i 1 One day this gentleman thought he would put the little dog’s obedience to the test; so he told his servant to put, a plate of meat on the floor for him. The servant did so, and the little dog ‘ame ranning to the plate, for he was very hungry. But just as the poor thing was thinking what a fine treat he was going to have, and was about to help himself to the meat, his master called him away. The little dog heard the call, and looked wistfully at the meat. The meat was nice and fresh from the butcher's shop, and certainly very tempting to a hungry dog. But the little creature knew that the first thing was to obey his master. He, therefore, turned from the plate of meat without touching it, and ran to sce what was wanted, wag- ging his tail so pleasantly that it just meant a smile, The little dog, I think, was deserv- edly a favourite; and it would be well if’ all little folks followed his example, doing what they knew to be their duty before seeking their own pleasire or gratification. More thanonce J have heard a mother eall her little girl, who has answered ‘; Yes, mamma,’ but never went. She was busy dressing her doll, perhaps or undressing it for bed, or just finishing her lessons and did not wish to leave them, or putting the last touch to the picture she had been painting and wanted to,complete It. -—-- — ——- —- o— -— The man who has the faculty of making everybody like him is very fortunate and very happy, though he may be neither handsome, rich nor learned. And he makes other people happy, too. He is not bigoted or sel- fish, but believes in the rights of others. He does not know everything, but is quite willing to betaught. He is kind und charitable. When you enter his presence it is just like the effect ofa warm fire on a cold night. He always stands up for the weakest side—is very forgiving; very: pt to overlook your shortcomings, and think you will do better next time. If any of the boys get into trouble they go tohim. He has a faculty of smoothing it all out, and starting them on the right path again. Older men go to him also. His clear, concise manner of stating a Case, 1s sure to brush the fog away when they--are perplexed. His wife and children are happy and rosy, with a way that is suggestive of pleasant things at home. When in society, his manner is perfect. Heis very atten- tive,‘ and listens to your hobby with the utmost patience. He knows just who is the, most lonely and needs a little attention. If there is a girl or ancient maiden who is overlooked, Mr. N., will be sure to find her corner and haye a pleasant chat, which brightens her up for the whole evening. In fact | he has a way—not by flattery, for he does not descend to that, but by the reflex of his own sunny disposition—of making everybody feel pleased with himself. This is the secret of his popularity. —+__._.—__.@ << <a> +o eo He who has most of heart knows most of sorrow. We have more indolence in the mind than in the body. Manners require time, as nothing is more vulgar than haste. It is easy to look down on others ; to look down on ourselves is the diffi- culty. The superiority of some men is merely Tocal. They are great because their associates are little. Hope is the only good which is com- mon.to all men; those who have no- thing more possess hope still. (CHOICE The Greatest Medical Discovery since the Creation of Man, or since the Commencement of the Christian Era.. There never has been a time when the heal- ing of so many different diseases has been caused by outward application as the present. It is an undisputed fact that over half of the entire population of the globe resort to the use of ordinary plasters. Dr. MELVIN’s CAPsiIcuM Porovs PLASTERS are acknowledged by all who have used them, to act quicker than any other plaster they ever before tried, and that one of these plasters will do more real service than a hundred of the ordinary kind. All other plasters are slow of action, and require to be worn continaally to effect a cure; but with these it is entirely dif- ferent: the instant one is applied the patient will feel its effect. Physicians in all ages have thoroughly tested and well know the effect of Capsicum; and it has. always been more or less used as a medical agent for an outward application; but it is only of very recent date that its advan- tages in a porovs plaster have been discovered. Being, however, convinced of the wonderful eures effected by DR. MELVIN’S. CAPSICUM Porous PLASTERS, and their superiority over all other plasters, they now actually prescribe them, in their practice, for such diseases as rheumatism, _— in the side and back, and all such cases as have required the use of plasters orliniment. After you have tried other plas- ters and liniments, and they have failed, and ou want a certain cure, ask your druggist for R. MELVIN’s CAPSICUM POROUS PLASTER. You can hardly believe your own convictions of its wonderful effects. Although powerful and quick in its action, you can rely on its safety for the most delicate person to wear, as it is free from lead and other poisonous material commonly used in the manufacture ef ordin- ary plasters. One trial is a‘ sufficient guarantee of its merits, and on plaster will sell hundreds to your friends. Ask your druggist for Dr. MELVIN'’s CAPSI- cum Porous PLASTER, and take no other; or, on a of 25 cents for one, $1 for five, or $2 for a dozen, they will be mailed, post paid, to any address in the United States or C \ MANUFACTURED BY THE NOVELTY PLASTER WORKS Lowell, Mass., U.
