Wn . i [he world has nothing constant but | its instability. —[ Oriental ' ; Embrace wisdom, and He shall be} your defence.—[ John Seymour, 1538. Policy consists in serving God in such a manner as not todefend the devil.— {Thomas Fuller. The man is strange who, seeking a lost animal, suffers his own soul to be lost—who, ignorant of himself, claims to understand God,—[ Arabic. A good man and a wise man may at times be grieved with the world, but no man is discontented with the world if he does bis duty in it. To attempt to serve God without love is like rowing against the tide. But love oils the wheels and makes duty sweet. The angels are swift-winged in God’s service, because they love Him. Jacob thought seven years but little for the love he had for Rachel. Love is never weary. —[ Watson. Christ is the great central fact in the world’s history; to Him everything looks forward or backward. All the lines of history converge upon Him. Ail the march of providence is guarded by Him. All the great purposes of God culminate in Him. The greatest and most momentous fact which history re-| cords is the fact of his birth—}! [ Spergeon. . _——-_- The Cholera. An enterprising correspondnt has ob- tained and cabled to this country the opinions of two eminent French savants —Mr. Pasteur and Dr. Vulpian—in re- gard io the outbreak of cholera at Toulon, in that country. M. Pasteur referring to the immediate cause of the diseases, said: “There is surely a mic- robe of cholera. Cholera comes from India, where it is epidemic.” M. Pasteur added thit the best preventive is good hygiene, and above all, the avoidance of water from wells in affect- ed towns. M. Vulpian declares tbat corrosive sublimate is the best disinfec- tant indrains and ciosets for apart- ments, He recommended phenic acid, and he advised anybody suffering from diarrhea to take immediately ten drops of leudanum in a glass ot water. When the cholera has once declared itself, it should be treated with opium. Siace absorption is difficult and sometimes impossible to cholera patients, alkaloids should be employed, of which morphine is the most powerfal. M. Vulpian con- tinued by repeating that morphine will be the great remedy, should unfortu- nately an epidemic break forth, as it it is quite possible. We again repeat that cleanliness and effective sewerage, such as can only be had through frequent flushing of the sewers, is the great safe- guard against that plague, should it un- fortunately cross the Atlantic as it did in the summer of 1854.— Hamilton Times. i nee The Value of a Horse.
