and that is that the Williams Piano has

tured people. The record ofthe achieve-
mont of such a desirable reputation,
extending, as it does, over_more than half
a century, is interesting in the extreme.
In |849 the first Williams Piano was
manufactured in the City of Toronto.

first, but as the National prosperity in-
creased, the demand for Williams Pianos
climbed steadily up, until fifteen years
go it was found necessary to move the
fact to Oshawa, Ontario,whereit now

a mpacig of 8,000 instruments yearly,

integrity of its founders and the skill and
training of Canadian workmen. The
Williams Pianos may truly be said to be

The Williams Piano Co. has recently

force. The lay mind no longer tries
to grasp it. Daily miracles n.re per-
formed under his eyes-the trolley
car, the telephone, the incandescent
light-but he is unmoved. He has al-
most ceased to wonder at them. We
have short memories. It is rather
the necromancy than the miracle of
electricity which fascinatea and aston-
lshea. .
A Newspaper Sensation.
Some weeks ago the English pub-
llc was astounded when a. London
newspaper had Cliamberlain's New-
castle Ipeech on sale on the streets of
tho metropolis 5 few minutes after it
had been delivered. ‘They almost
doubted that such an achievement
were possible, oven with the printed
proof in their hands. And yet tho
gplanation is very simple. Beside
o speaker a number of telephones
had been placed, the wires lending
into the ofllco of the newspaper. At
this London end with the receivers :it
their ears sat a corps of shorthand
reporters. Each msn worked for two
minutes taking down the speech. Ho
would then be relieved while his not-
es were transcribed into longhand,
and sent to the compositors. So
rapidly was the work carried on that
tho type was only about five minutes
behind the shorthand character. As
a result, Mr. Chamberlain had herd-
ly driven away from the hull when
the London newsboys were on the
limos! with their "extra s11ccia,lS."
Telephone and Phonograph.
This some paper-The Daily Muil-
announced on Monday that it had
conducted reasonably successful ex-
periments with tho olectrogroph, an
invention of E. G. Caven, im Eng-
lllh engineer, who once worked with
Edison at Menio Purk, New Jersey.
The olectrogaph is nothing more or
less than a recording telephone-a
combination of phonograph and tele-
phone. Messages spoken over the
telephone are recorded nt the other
ond, and can be reud at any time by
the person to whom they are nd-
dreased. Thus a. permanent record of
conversations may bo obtained. No
annoyance need be caused if the per-
son telephoned huppens to be away
or engaged. When he returns ho will
had the message awaiting him. The
