Sterling rose 1 3-4 cents 145155.05 3-8. the highest level since June 16. reflecting. apparently, transfers of large sums from the continent. Concurrently, forward contracts in French francs widened abruptly to .35 of a cent under the spot. rate, compared with .26 of a cent on Saturday. The movement was believed to have been based on un- easiness in some quarters over the heavier armament expenditures in Frame. The spot rate held practically nnclinnged at 6.58 3-8 cents. a. level which enabled international bank- ers to engage $4,648,000 in gold at the Bank of France for shipment out of the country. This brought thc total secured from that source to $42,800,000 since Aug. '7. The Canadian dollar was quoted at a discount of 1-64 of one pér cent. MONTREAL. Sept. 8--Pound sterling advanced l 3-4 cents on Montreal foreign exchanges today to $5.05 3-8, highest since June. 1934.
