A North Carolina wagoner sold his dog to a Laurens County man the other day for a half a barrel of sorghum syrup. The doy, however, refused to be sold, and took refuge under the wagon. The Laurens County man erawied after him with a piece of meat in one hand and a rope in the other. Although there were several spectators of the scene that ensued, it is difficult to get at the facts. All agree that there was a scuffle under the wagon, aecompasied by yelps, yells, but no ove is Willing to affirm that the man had the dog or the dog had the map. finally the dog, it would seem, brushed ‘tip against the hind leg of the mule, and then all was still. Jt is not certain what kitled the doe. One of the spectators avid he thought he heard a trace chaip rattle. but when he weat ronnd to ex- Amine the wule she was asleep. The nan had Jost his hat, his coat, and the greater part of his troysers, apd a sub- sequent exoTalaution proved that the dog died with one ear and » handful of hair in his mouth. ra >> a+? Texas Prairies. At the moment that you start westward on the’‘Sunset Route,” the landscape salutes you in all the. loveliness of a blossoming prairie in its first luxuriance of green ander the tenderearly sun. The flowers are numberless. When you have counted a couple of dozen varieties, you find you bave only begun. Here the painted cap mak-s the great reaches gay ; here yellow indigo stars them and present- ly lends them its color, leading away toto the bound!e:s horizon a Field of the Cloth of Gold: here it is scarlet with the scarlet phlox, her blue with the verbena, here the jilies, with their long suowy filaments wonderously alive, whiten all the wind- ings of an unseen brook ; here clothed in the priceless small clover, and greener than Dante's freshly broken emeralds, be- neath vast and hollow heavens, and ‘moulded in collosal calm,”’ the naked rairie roils away, league af.er league, un- Ceked to the gulf. 3 Oh, the glory of a Texas prairie under a vertical sun! the light, the color, the distance, the vast solitude and silence, the limitless level, the everlasting rest! A flock of white cranes rise flashing in the light and soar away; a mirage lifts the lofty timber that outlines the distant river, and shows you the stream shining beneath, shaking silver vapor at its feet ; in the creck beside you fearless blue ducks dip, and dive, and skim away, scattering water-drops ; a drove of horses, rising from beds of sunflowers, with flying manes and tails, go bounding into space ; vast herds of eattle drop the clover without lifting their heads as you sweep by; riders are round~ ing’ up theirsadroves, hawks are hovering, birds are singing, wiods are blowing, ead what seemed only solitude and silence is full of life action and music. Now the forests of the Brazos begin to rustle ; cypress and magnolia, linden and locust, ash and beech and elm, hiekory and black~jack, dense to darkness, yet trembling with dew and sun, laced with gay vines of trumpet and passion flowers, and with huge ropes of blossoming grapes slung from tree to tree, thick with under- growth of dogwood and redbub, wild peach and cane, and their great dark live- oaks wrapped in the fantastic shadows of a thousand gray swaying cobwebs, and standing weird and awful in their Druidi- cal beard. — Harriet Prescott Spoford. There never has been a time when the heal- ing of so many different diseases has been caused by outsrard application as the present. It is an undisputed fact that over half of the entire population of tho globe resort to the use of ordinary p)asters. Dr. MELVIN’S Capsicum Porous PLASTERS are acknowledged by ail who have used them, to act quicker than any other plaster they ever before tried, and that one of these plasters will do moére real service than # hundred of the ordinary kind. Ail other plasters are slow of action, and require to be worn continually to effect a cure; but with these it is entirely dif- ferent: the instant one is applied the patient will feel its effect. Physicians in all ages have thoroughly tested and well know the effect of Capsicum; and it has always been more or less used as @ medical agent for an outward application; but it is only of very recent date that its advan- tages in a porous plaster have been discovered. Being, however, convinced of the wonderful eures effected by Dr. Mrivin’s CAPSICUM Porous PLASTERS, and their superiority over all other plasters, they now actually prescrib® them, in their practice, for such diseases as rheumatism, pain in the side and back, and all such cases as have required the use of plasters orliniment. After you have tried other pias- ters and liniments, and they have failed, and you wanta certain cure, ask your druggist for ym. MELVIN’S CAPSICUM POROUS PLASTER. You can hardly believe your own convictions of its wonderful effects. Although powerful and quick in its action, you ean rely on its safety for the most delicate person to wear, as it is free from lead and othae poisonous material commonly used in the manufacture ef ordin- ary plasters. One trial is a sufficient guarantee - of its merits, and one plaster will seli hundrede to your friends. Ask your druggist for Dr. MELvrn’s CArst!- cuM PoROUS PLASTER, and take no other; or, on receipt of 25 cents for one, $1 for five, or $2 for a dozen, they will be mailed, post paid, to any address in the United States or Canadas.
