Fifty years ago almost to the day, Mr. Claude Kenny joined the summerside Fire Department, Mr. Kenny is now Deputy Chief of the Department and as he looks buck he can recall that only two of the men who were members of the department when he joined are alive today. W. '1'. Matheson and Thomas Johnson. both retired after serving a period as Fire Chief. The men who served st that time were a hardy lot for most of the equipment was hauled by hand end after a long run pulling a liose cart or pumper one had to be hardy indeed to immediately man a hand pump or climb a ladder. They certainly did not join the department for the mon- ey that was in tt._ They received fifty cents a practice for twelve practices a year and they ittend- ed the fires gratuitously so that their annual salary amounted to ‘he magnificent sum of $6.00. The "lain piece of equipment in the department fifty years ego was the "Beaver". a steam pumper hauled by a team of horses end only the veterans of the depart- ment were attac to it. This ancient machine is still stored in "w. fire hall. There was no water system in the town at that time.
