But after long experiment a means has been provided for practically niullify- ing negro suffrage in those states where the negro vote was largest Amendments have been adopted to the constitutions of Mississippi, Louisiana and South Carolina.. which in the case of the first-mentioned state have passed the ordeal of an ap- peal to the United Ssates Supreme Court and which will have the effect of excluding the great body of the negro population from the ballot box Alabama and Geoigia are expected to follow suit, and when this is done the negro vote wlll be pretty effectually disposed of. The Booton Herald tells that Broker T. Washington, the ablest and most enlightened advocate the colored men have developed among themselves, is ‘disposed to take a. philosophical view of the situation. He is not disposed to conduct a political warfare for the .restoration of the rights thus rudely _shorn away, but advises his colored fellow-citizens to avoid politics and iturn their attention to the moral, material and educational advance- ment of the race. In point of fact the voting privilege has been of little, if any advantage to the colored; people, because of their ignorance and the hostility and as- _ saults which its exercise called forth on the part of a portion of the white _ population. It may be that they will be subjected to fewer outrages when they cease to be active factors in the I politics of the country, But it aiiords .a strange commentary upon the De- claration of Independence and the fourteenth amendment that the right of millions to vote can thus be swept away by state action King Menelik, of Abyssinia, claims that the Queen of Sheba, who visited *Solomon was the founder of his dy- nasty, and that he is the ninety-sew enth in direct descent from her. If his claims can be made good the Ne- gus belongs to a. fairly old family. lf the Montreal Witness does not succeed in its laudable attempt to ob- tain a national song for Canada it will not be for our want of time and deliberation. A recent issue of the Witness intimates that there are a large number of competitors, whose songs have been forwarded to the l three Canadian judges who are to se- lect the best ten from the number. As the competition closed on first August last the judges appear to have taken four months to reach a decision which it is said will be rendered “short-ly.” The best ten songs will then be sent to the Marquis of Duffer- _Q 2 in for afinal award Which the Wit- UQ. & § l ness says may be expected some time 355 » § in January. After all it is extremely ‘ ii ' , doubtful whether a natural song that will hold its place and be generally accepted can be obtained by competi- tion. There is perhaps no form of that city thinks that the use of gas for heating and cooking wlll become heating at once so convenient, so cleanly, requiring so little attendance and so readily adjustable to the wants of a household as gas heating. But only a low rate can render gas as economical to the household as coal. There was an exciting time in a. Toronto theatre a few nights ago be-l tween two “ladies” over a high hat which one of them wore, preventing the other from seeing what was going on, on the stage. The argument be- i be stopped and the certain rung down for a time. The high hat is a nuis- ance in church as well as in amuse- ment halls, and interferes with the enjoyment of sermon, lecture and concert alike. Ladies who take an interest in reforms ought to give this matter their attention. The latest project for providing a better means of crossing the English channel is the invention of a French- man. The depth of the channel is fiom 130 to 150 feet. i The inventor proposes to smooth the bottom, lay s. rail track thirteen feet wide and ele- vated 30 feet above the bottom. His train will have wheels 80 feet in dia- meter, and will bring the cars above the surface of the water. The esti- mated cost is only $3,750,000 and it is calculated to make the trip across the Channel in about an hour. The proposal seems to be an engineering absurdity. _ A The_ first thanksgiving proclamation in America ot' which there is any re- cord was issue li August 1645 at New York and in the Dutch language. Among the causes of_tha.nkfulness set- forth was a. long-wished for peace with the Indians. It was addressed to the clergyman of the Dutch and English churches. and concluded as follows: “That God Almighty may be specially thanked, praised and blessed on next Wednesday iorenoon, being the 6th of September, the text to be appropriate and the sermon, ap- plicable thereto. Your Reverence will please announce the matter to the congregation next Sunday, so that they may have notice. A, D_ Morton, President of the Nova Scotia Conference on behalf of St. J amos” Methodist Church of Montreal. The appeal represents the church as in danger of being sold out under the hammer. How much the debt is we are not informed, but the subscription list ulolishecl in the Mo » P ntreal Star shows a total of $50,000 subscribed towards its payment. Mr. John Torrance has subscribed $30,000, and yet Rev. Mr. Morton tells the Her- ald “it will require more than ten John Torrances to meet the require- ments in the present case." came so excited that the play had tofi Travellers. Not Allowed .
