Mr this llousc. that the passed lu Prince Edwuril island done at great deal oi good l`0l' that pro- vince und has been 'the means of driv- ing out ot' the province the sole oi’ in- toxicating liquor. There is. uo,doubt that ln the country parts of the' pro- vince there is not a drop of liquor sold and lu consequence of the passing oi' the Act l believe that the wealth of the country has been largely added to. Since 1900 we have progressed- very rapidly and l believe there is at lcast three times as much wealth in the pro- vince as there was in the year when the Act was passed. As it is I attrib- ute a good deal of it to the tact that this prohibition Act wus passed and that it has been properly enforced. There is only one matter connected with this Act which had it detrimental effect and tbutis that liquor could bc imported into the province; at any rate it was thought it could bc lm- ported into the province. In the first Act passed lu 1900 absolute pro- hibition was provided for. but when the Act came up here to the Governor General in Council, the Government of the province were informed that ii would be necessary to amend the Act by providing that it should not inter- fere with sales made I-y people i11 Prince Edward Island i`rolu people living outside of the province. Section 37 oi the present Act, which has been consolidated since, was then put 1111011 the statute book in 1901 in the follow-. ing terms: 37. Al- though the legislature did make that nmendeut to the Act. l think they had absolute power to the ileul with tlu- qucstion.
