THE PETIIEL AND SILVER SPRAY. The latest danger ot international com- plications between the Dominion and the United States arises out of the attempted seizure of the American steam fishing smack Silver Spray by the Canadian re- venue cutter Petrel, during which Q shot or two was tired by the latter. ,At this oatcdistance and in view of past acquain- -rtance with the Government’s Potrel, we are rather pleased to hear of the cutter . distinguishing herself in any way. It we remember rightly the Petrol was cr- iginally a lake craft and was purchased by the Marine Department for the purpose ot testing the Capes Route during the winter season. She was brought down here and placed in the icy straits and after making Summerside proved unequal to her task and was laid up at Tormeniine until tne f- llowing spring. ` As a wint.~r boat the Petiel wasa signal failure but the experiment brought some Q ridicule upon the Marine Department ot that day. As a fishery protection cruiser poachers. In the recent episode it ap- pears that the Silver Spray was clestlyl fishing in Canadian waters When the Petrel came along and ordered her to heave to. The captain ot the Spray was wise in his generation, and with more tear of conthcation than of the Petrel’s old brass smcoth~bore artillery gave his “ft “full speed ahead” and iran away CI- . He was fast outpacing the Petrel when the l .t er opened tire in order to compel a T stop. But _the Spray kept on, although say-.ral shots appear to ha re struck hone, and ore of them made the splinters fly as ia. crashed through the captain’s cabin. .\'.> o.:e was ki!l¢d cr wounded, fortunate- ‘k l_\, and the Petrel was distanced in the = rac : to nent-ral waters. . Ns inter national complications are y likely to arise, and no doubt the poacher was glad to make good his escape as he did. Ol course “he did not know he was in Canadian water.” They never do kno w- till afterwards. But Canada is being iauuhed at for the Iailure to cap- ii ture A Buifalo paper describes the only no on the entteras “a small, antiquated E to gras 5 rare luck toiltavefgfma s hit at 111, *It may have been aitol an ao- eideit that he did so. And the laugh la against the ntended the equipment of all the Pro- jvinces and Territories west of Ontario !They have rivers and harbors in British 5 Columbla.as well as we in oureastern Pro- lvinces. 'We believe they are quite as 'iwell equipped with light houses and other aids tonavlgation as we. For the prairie country and the Great West ‘generally we provide the Mounted Police ata cost ot nearly a million dollars a year. Having also given the people of the west tive times the railway mileage in proportion to population that the peo- ple of the centre and east of the Domi- nion enjoy, we fail for the present to see the urgency ot the demand for more rail- ways. li. Our correspondent C. whose letter ap- pears in another column renders good service in calling attention to the neglect- ed condition of the Old Cemetery on Mal- pequc Road. Our new and beautiful cemeteries evince a good measure of taste and loving care for the resting places for the the remains of loved ones departed, which appears sadly wanting in the older cemetery. Many citizens have felt sadly over this neglect, but did not know how to proceed to bring about a better order of things. What is the proper charge of many persons collectively is very fre- quently neglected. The Guardian wel- comes the movement to awaken concerted public interest in this matter audlhopes it may be followed up. The city's credit is in some m=asure at stake when the graves of so many of the fathers, mothers and relatives of the present generation, and of others once active in our civic life hui' who may have no descendants here. are left so sadly neglected. l» ._-- , 7 l Would You‘Think lt?
