Ve Shaffer I don’t recollect of the crossing ever hav- ing stopped so early a3 it has this spring. The Straits so compavetively cloar of ice is owing to the continuous N. W. winds all winter, which was driving the ice out to sea as fast as it was making. We had the ice unusually light the greater part of the crossing season ; strange to say—and frost so intense. Mr. Penman Allan of Cape Tormentine, has bought Mr. Cornelius Campbell's Abdallah Stu d, and is paying 4 fine price for him, viz., $200.00. Mr. John Caogh- lan, Crapaud, is also buying a number of horses On commission. Mr. Avard has been here for some time buying fat cattle, all waiting shipment. i} tae Our country is teeming with productions, only wanting proper facility of export. It ‘* whas goot,” they say. By the way, it is really high time that the Railway Statien here was shifted some where or other from its present position. Where itis now, makes it a hot-bed of acci- dents. Father Dan gave his lecture here recent 'ly on Irish Scenery. There is some talk of an asylum being erected in Summerside. Falconwood is too far away, for the folks who have gone mad over a recent election. The temperance question is the all] absorb- ing topic of the day. Men recognize the blast ing evil ef intemperance om how |to deal “with it. seems to be a puzg le. The Scott Act is a failure for lack of public sympathy. Some ef the most respectable members of the community are engaged— so says rumor—in the liquor traftic, and so long as the vast majority of the people patronize them, just so long will the advo- cates of the Scott Act meet with disappoint- ment and defeat. Few pity them. The people are not necessarily intemperate. The people cannot swallow, in fact some of the very best people on the Island look upon it as an insult, in gentle terms. Asa whole, the Island is praiseworthily remarkable for subriety, and many can be found, honest stauneh ‘oid teetatallers, who prefer to win the intemperate by the hand of love, rather than the arm of torce. In matters ‘of this sort human nature very often refuses to be driven however easily it may be led. Better to reclaim the drunkard by love, | al than by law. The whole affair is ar| open and a vexed question, about whi ch} men differ, and I suppose will differ for all time. We are greatly exercised about the pro- | posed Cape Traverse Railway, and public opinion advocates the County Line route.
