The Panther Prints ¢ INTE Co Periodical cuts at the library By BRUCE HENRY What-are periodicals? Well interchangeable words for periodicals are magazines and journals. Out of a total of 1200 periodicals there will be 150-200 less next year because of inflation. For the past 4 years the library received the same amount of money in their budget from the university who received it from the government. However, each year periodicals increase on an average of 12-15%, because the publisher has less people subscribing to their journal or maga- zine forcing them to increase their prices. A total possible cut of 30% was decided by last year s' budget comittee in order to cover the inflation rate. “It’s not their fault, it’s the inflation...” was expressed by Mr. Dan Savage a University Librarian. A few alternatives to cut the expense were inter library loans, but the process takes about a week. Another was electronic text like Internet or Web but the only problem with using the Web is the accuracy of the information - since there are no laws placed upon factuality toward the material on the Web. “How can you trust it” was a comment by Mr. Savage regarding the web, including how Web pages don’t have any back issues. This years cuts included eliminating a secretarial posi- tion. However during the budget meeting the library protested any cuts made to the collections and hours of service. On the other hand if the library is forced to make another 30% cut next year these protected items will be cut. The libraries goal is to cancel issues that students and faculty don’t use. For instance they are considering targeting and cancelling the most expensive publishers to reduce their initial cost. The library needs input from both students and faculty in determining what the library should keep and what to cancel. It is almost impossible for the them to update all of their present subscriptions, but without our help how will they suit our educational needs. in a worl that is ¢ one sustain when SOOR ere UPEI's Coat of Arms BRUCEHENRY Former UPEI president Dr.C.W.J.Eliot noticed we were one of theonly universities who did not have a coat of arms.
