H\VE HAD A VERY HARD TIME-~STRIPPED AND BEATEN. Robert E. Steer, one of the secre- taries of the P.esbyte ian missions, re- ceived several letters from missionaries in China and Japan. The following is an extract from the Comnmaunication written by Rev. J. A. Fish, dated Nagasaki, Japan, July 238: MINER CHARL ‘A number of the outstations of my field have been looted. A _ natwe pastor and a native doctor and a student have been almost beaten death becaues they refused to recant, Word of our Canadian Presbyterian friends is to the effec) that in escaping to Yant Tsi from Ha Nan they were stripped of everything by robbers. There must be many lives in danger in far western China, persons so dis- tant that it wouid take one or two months for the news to comein. The strain on accommodation caused by the influx of refugees is putting up the price of board to fabulous figures. At the Nagasaki hotel board is reported $21 per day Noword comes ‘from Pekin and Pao Ting Fu. We hear of wholesale slaughter of Christians in Chi Li province.” Under date of Camton, July 18, Rev. Henry B. Noyes writes: “So long as the viceroys of *1 provinces stand by their present agreement to abide by to | OTt®tON AUGUST 18, ryoo ided@ from wounds or diseases, fo one seems to have figures for. Five or six thousand was the number guessed at a couple of months ago by a Boer offi- cial in Pretoria, according to a corres- respondent. Of the British, 23,647 have been invalided home, and several thousand are still sick or wounded in the hospitals in South Africa. The great bulk of the British loss is from disease, as usual in war. As the abeve table shows, the death from sick- ness number nearly one-half more than the deaths in action. Among the troops invalided home, the proportion of sick was for greater, outnu - bering the wounded nearly twoto one, A parliamentary of July 2 states that of the 23,647 officers and men_invalided home, 14,979 were from sickness. The wounded numbered 5,668. Altogether the UWritish have had nearly 12,000 killed or wounded, and nearly 20,000 knocked out by disease. Tae Boers have had apparently about half as many killed or wounded, but only a comparatively small number sick, as was to be expected from their being thoroughly acclimated, better clothed, accustomed to the fare, and having sufficient local knowledge to avoid bad water, moving about and camping in small bodies, and having probably,a higher average o' rugged health to begin with. Ofcourse the l:ss of the British “ir valided home” is almost wholly temporary. Every con- valescent from enteric fever is sent the treatise, protect foreigners and re- fuse allegiance to Tuan, the rebel prince, it does not look to me probable that there will be war in South China. it seenas to me that it will be to the interest cf foreign nations as well as the viceroys to confine their military operations to North China. If this is done I would hope that our work in South China would not be serivusly affected.” The Rev. D. N. Lyons writes from Soo Chow on June 20, saying that Dr. Park and he were the only male, missionaries left there. The local | officials wished them to remain. Mr, | Lyons adds: “I was constrained to| offer my services to our consul general , to help in the campaign against the Empress Dowager, but whether I would be more of a hindrance than a help may be a question.” COST OF WAR. which.2— Detr.i Free Press. ——___ 46a A Good Meomach. (Montreal Star.) It is an evil day when the Demon of | Extravagance takes possession of a man or of anation—a day beginning with laughter and boasting, but ending in bitter sorrow and the biackness of night. Who ever heard of arecklessly extravagant man being permanently prosperous. Everyone has noted how } tlge man who persistently wastes his in- come, whether it be small or great, comes to griefin the end, The who spends all he earns never gets on in the world. The workingman who on Satu day night gets rid of all he has earned during the week becomes av “sea dependent upon o hers in his old age. } Ecoi 0 <y is not p:rsimony, but ex- travagenc:; is wastefulness. Everyone has noted how differently two men having the same income live, when one is eco 10mical and the other extra- vagant, One perhaps secures for him- self aid ‘anily apretty home, enjoys the simple comforts of life, and has mcney in the benk for a rainy day. Th: others sp: nds all he earns and yet never seems to have anything. He may n t be bad or dissipated, but he gets rid of his money without getting What the number is of Boers inval— any Satisfactory return for it and is des a a _— titute in his old age. All his had work goes for nothing because he 15 extravagant Hespends his mon y on useless, unnecessary |hings wh n he has plenty and afterwards has to go without necessities- Of course it sometimes happens that a man’s wages are too small for him to Save anything, no matter how econom- ical he may be, and then the fault is not his, but every one of these who is thrifty, sensible, far seeing an: fond of his fainily, avoids getting into debt if it is within the range of _ possi- bility. A working man with a debt has not his serrows to seek. An extravagant business man, wast- ing his money on high living and foolish investments, ends in bankrup- tcy, while his eccnomical rival, saving money to extend his business, prosper and grows rich. ‘The economical man sometimes spends large amounts to carry out big projects, but he would never ve able to dc so if he did not husband his means and carefully guard against unnecessary expendit- ures On small things. The economical man bears in mind the fact that the world’ goes through alternating periods of prosperity and depression that good times are invari- ably followed by bad times, and he regulates his expenditures accordingly. If he has contracted a debt during a period of depression he reduces it during a perion of prosperity. He does not greatly raise his scale of ex- penditure in the gocd times pecause he knows that having once adopted a cettain style of living ic is diffcult to return to the lower scale of expendi- ture when bad times come. Nations may be extravagant as well as individuals and a Government some- times goes ona spree. ‘Mania for Operations Among the Doctors. No Need of the Knife to Gure Plies. A Surer, Cheaper Easier Way, Dr. Chase’s Ointment: Dread of the surgeon’s knife causes multitudes of people to suffer on year after year with piles, when they could be cured without risk, expense, or dan- ger of an operation by using Dr. Chase’s Ointment, the only preparation uaranteed to cure any case of itching, leeding, or protruding piles. Rey. J. A. Baldwin, Baptist minister, Arkona, Ont. writes:—“For over twenty years I was a great sufferer from itching and pretruding piles. I used many remedies and underwent three very painful surgical operations, all without obtaining any permanent benefit. When about to give up in de- spair I was told to use Dr. Chase's Oint- ment, and did so, finding relief at once, I used three boxes, and almost en- tirely cured. The itching is all gone. IE have advised others to use it, believing it would cure them as it has me.” Dr. Chase’s Ointment is the only positive and actual cure for every form of piles, 60 cents a box, at all dealers, or Edmanson, Bates and Co., Toronte. ee EE ee eee WANTED.—A smart steady boy about 15 years Of age to attend a store.
