Orrawa, Sept. 27.—Sir Louis Davies 1 ft Ottawa for Halifax Saturday evening. —_—_ There is intense indignation in St. George’s Bay, Nfld., over the action of the British warships in closing down the lobster factories of residents and confiscat- ing the products. Last week the cruiser Pelican landed a body of men, who sur- rounded the factories, ejected the inmates and took on board all the pachages of prepared lobsters that were ready for ship- meut. The residents are much incensed at this proceeding, a repetition of which is threatened all along the French shore. The excuse given by the marines is that the factories interfere with those of French fishermen. The people threaten to resist the marines, and serious consequences are feared before many days elapse. The colonial government is powerless to inter- fere, as the warships have supreme authority in the matter. —_— Ay OLp AND WELL TrigD RemeDy.— Mis. A medical paper in a recent issue has described the characteristic movements of the limbs made by persons suffering from different diseases. The gestures of the patfens when asked to locate his pain not only indicate its seat, but de- scribe its character. Thus, if the pain be in the chest and distributed over a large area the sufferer sweeps the palm of his hand over his chest with a cir- cular motion, but should the pain be local he first draws his hand away from the body and then, with the index fin- ger outstretched and the others curved cautiously, approaches the spot where the trouble is. In appendicitis he holds the palm of the hand over the diseased area without touching the skin. When pains, the patieut slaps the abdomen. A child who complains of continuous pain in the stomach, when there is no tenderness on pressure is probably afilicted with disease of the spine. In hip joint disease the pain will be re- ferred to at a point inside the knee. With violent diffused noninflammatory pain in the leg the patient grasps the limb affected. If it be a shooting pain, he will point at the place with one finger. The pain of hepatic neuralgia or shingles is indicated with the thumb or foreiinger. In joint pains the patient approaches the seat of trouble cautiously with the hand flat. A curious case is qnoted of a patient complaining of a severe headache, Be- ing asking in what part of the head it was, he answered, ‘‘The top,’’. and when further questioned as to the exact spot pressed his finger on the side above the cheek bone. This he did three times, though declaring that the seat of the pain was exactly on the top of the head. The cause of the trouble was found to be a bad tooth, Richelieu as an Editor. The first reporter of France was Louis XIII. The National library possesses the manuscripts of 36 articles written by that king. Almost all are actounts of his military operations, These’ arti- cles were published in the Guzette de France. The ‘‘copy.’’ however, did not go directly tothe printer. Louis XIII wrote ubominable French, and he bad vague notions of orthography. His ar- ticles were corrected and often entirely rearranged by a secretary named Lucas, who copied them, sending to Richelieu the pew manuscript. Richelieu exam- ined it in his turn and often intreduced additional corrections. At the siege of Corbie the king wrote a few lines eulo- gistic of the cardinal, but afterward crossed them out of his article. Riche- lieu wrote them in again, and so they appeared in the Gazette de France.— Revue de Paris. Who does not kiov women and yo n- girls who are continually in teer-? Wuo always see the dark side?
