Beside the classic Ayr, the “Sweet
Alt-On" the “Bonnie Doon" and the
winding Nith there Is a variety of
scenery which cannot be surpassed. -
On ri lovely morning in June 1907
l_ took the train at St. Enoch Sta-
UOD. Glasgow, to visit the home ol
"Robbie Burns "` _
Soon after leaving the city our'
way led through a most, picturesque,
country. The sun had just risen over
mantle ol purple, crimson and gold,;
and the solt.bliie haze ol the Scot»,
tish summer morning was Boating?
away to' nothingness, leaving every,
object fresh and manilied in ther
iirnped air. l
Many noble residences could be seen.
on the hillside, the ruins ol many ii.
venerable abbey, the remains ol-
ancient cnttles, keeps and strong-_
holds which have stood many a siege'
and around which are woven urany al
wierd tale. Overlooking the "Leven,
water" stands the ruins ol Crook
rton castle. interesting as the place!
where Mary Queen of Scots und her;
husband Lord Darnley spent their;
noneyrnoou. I
Another interesting ruin is Paisley,
Abbey, built in the 12th century. Even]
in its ruined state it is an inrposingi
structure, and inspires one with al
feeling of awe. I
At Kilwinning there is also ri pic-1
turesque rhin ol un old abbey whiclil
we found well worth n visit. I
But we must pass on to the townl
which Burns described as:
“Auld Ayr, wham ne’er a toon sur-,
passes; _ '
For honest men, and bonnle lassiee"
Many, mu.ny interesting associa-
.rnd its neighbourhood. "The Auld
memory of the poet; are lull ot in-

town, visiting the “Wuliace tower”
on High Street, near where once
stood the tower ln which hir W.
Wallace was imprisoned, we went to
"Tum 0'Shanter Inn," which we
were informed by un inscription was
the place where "’I‘u.m O‘Shanter
and Souter Johnny" held their meet»
ings. It contains the chairs on which
the "t\\'a cronies" sat and the
"croups" from which they drunk the
“teaming swats." , '
“Tam O'Shanter"‘ the subject ot
Burn's poem is said to have been
one Douglas Graham who was in the
habit ol attending the weekly mark-
etrin Ayrtown, where, meetig Sou-_
ter Johnny they generally mndc a
night of it. Convivialty was n char-
acteristic of the times and as Burns
puts it,
"Fra November till October
They were fu lor weeks together."
lt is thought that Burns having
heard the sbory ol these "Ancient
Croniea" from his mother turned itl
into that remarkabie poem “'l`arn'
O'Shanter,” when be lived on a (ann
called Ellisland~ori the banks ot the

Craig" and “Ben Lomond." After
exploring this most interesting town,
which was once a Roman station, we
boarded an electric car which brought
us to the scenes so closely connected
with Burns. About a mile lrom the
town is “Clap house bridge" and the

Soon we fume to “The aultl clay
biggen," with its root ol str!-iv\'. ini
which Burns was born on it stormyl
night in Jan. 1759. This old house
has passed through rrrnny vicissi-
tudes. For some time it was dese-
crutcd hy being used os ri llllbl-lu
house but is now kept in repair by,
the trustees oi the monument.
On the panes ot glass may be seen
verses written by Burns with a dia-
mond.

it is said, Burns first saw the iiglrt,

his loot,” (looked at the pnlin of his
hand) and predicted.
