The second practice shoot of the
Home Guard took place yesterday af-
ternoon at Kensington Range and was
quite as successful as the ilrst prac-
tice. The special_ committee appoint-
ed to donate the medal given by Mr.
G. F. Hutcheson will keep to the
agreement of awarding the prize to
the msn who made the best score who
has never fired the 303 issue oi nm-
munition. Some of the men, for ex-
ample, have llot fired a rifle for thir-
ty years and still a number of others
have never _fired an army service
riiie. The winner, therefore, is un-
decided until after the next drill nlgllt.
Considering all the conditions the
scores were remarkably good with
new rifles, untried and without prac-
tice. The l-Iome Guard are grateful to
Capt, Landrlgsn, all excellent shot
himself, and Range Ofilcer Longworth,
who did all they could 'to place the
shots of the men on the target. Not
one of the men had a string of all
misses to his credit. Owing to the
scarcity of ammunition, which on
these occasions was supplied by old
veteran shots, these pleasant prac.
tice shoots will be few and far be-
tween. owing to the present crisis.
it has been favorably demonstrated,
however, that the Home Guard may
be relied ou for practical service
should occasion demand it. The fol-

MONEY GOINED _
ON BATTLEFIELD.
The news of the French soldiers
in the southern area of the war are
being paid in franc notes printed at
the front, and in on instant, at all
events, on a press set up within
sound of the enemy's guns, is not so
altogether extraordinary or unique a
circumstances as might at first be
supposed.
Similar expetiients have frequently
been adopted aforetime under like
circumstances, and for this reason.
Experience has shown that the regu-
lar payment of troops on active ser-
vice is a. vital matter, since men who
receive their money allowance regu-
larly, and so are able to provide
themselves with such little luxuries
as may be advisable, are better con-
tented, and enter more heartily into
the spirit of the campaign than do
those whose pay is witheld from
them. or only doled out irregularly at
uncertain intervals.
President Kruger found this out
for himself soon after the outbreak
of the Boer War, and made free use
of the gold mines on the Rand during
the early stages of the campaign in
order to obtain the wherewithal to
coin money to pay his burghers.
One field mint was set up in the
Boer camp outside Ladysmith, and
another in the western aren of the
war. and in both considerable num-
bers oi' gold coins were turned out.
These were all of the same size
and weight as our sovereigns and
half-sovereigns, with Kruger's head
on the obverse of each, and on the re-
serve a design of which the principal
features were a lion couchant, a burg-
her in field kit carrying a rifle and a
trek wagon. Altllougll, ns has been
said, quite a lot of these coins were
struck, they were soon so eagerly
sought after that they became com-
paratively rare, and they are now vul-
ued by collectors at sums iar in ex-
cess of their face values.
During the siege of Maieking again
notes for small amounts, ns also sur-
cllnrged stamps, were printed, and
this makeshift nloney passed freely
from hand to hand among the be-
sieged garrison,
In the same way. Gordon issued
both notes and coined money for use
inside Khartoum dul'illg the siege
which ended so dlsnstrollsly. The
latter took the form of dollars and
half dollars, and the material tlley\
were made from mostly lead. harden-
ed by ll small percentage of silver. Oi
course, it wus Gordon’s i lltelltion to
ultimately redeem this debased siege
»money in proper silver coinage, but
inte willed it otherwise.
Enormous quantities of siege and
battlefield money, both notes and coill,
were turned out by the Confederates
during the American Civil War which
broke out in 1861 over tile question of
slavery. The notes, of which many
thousands are still in existence, are
now worth little or nothing. .save ns
curiosities; but some of the pieces of
coined money are highly valued by
collectors.
This is especially the case as re-
gards the “Richmond dollars," which
were minted inside the town during
its 1 ong siege by the forces of Gen.
Grant, and which are really very
handsome coills. It is currently said,
by the way, that the dies of these
dollars were cut by a couple oi’ Lon-
doners, who had enlisted in the Con-
federate army. and who has originally
been compelled to leave their native
Londoll in n hurry- because of the
misapplied enterprise they had shown
there ill making money at their own
private "mints"
Very interesting-and also. at the
present time, very valuable- exam-
ples gi battlefield coins are those
piece known to collectors as “gun
money," which were minted by order
of King James Il., during the lighting
in Ireland that culminated in the
Battle of the Boyne. Their ostensible
value ranged from sixpence to five
shillings.
That is to say, these were the
amounts impressed upon them b y the
dies from which they were struck.But
ill every case the coin was made from
.the metal from melted cannon, each
piece being of the same size as its
silver original. The rarest of all is
now the copper live-shilling piece, sin-
gle perfect specimens of which fetch
very large sums indeed on the rare
occasions when they are for sale. -

our bed. We are not allowed to tell
where we are or what we are doing.
It was too bad that report regarding
'George spread. In future do not be-
lieve any of those reports unless you
receive word from the army as we are
not allowed to tellnnything about an-
other person’s injury until the oiiicial
news comes out. So far we have had
no colds. Fred White and the three ot
us bivouacked for n few days togeth-
er. He was glad to see the boys. The
war has not hurt him any as be looks
well.
The outlook is lot as good as it was
but no mutter what happens do not
for a. minute believe the Germans can
win. All the newspapers reports arc
not true.
I know it is hard on you people at
home, but I cannot understand how
so many fellows stay at home, when
there is nothing stopping them. i
have very little regard for them es-
pecially those who cud themselves
Christians. Tile spirit of sacrifice, of
giving up homes and friends in order
that Mlgilt be not King, is the true
essence . of Christianity. Almost
every home in England has sons in
the war but one never sees any
nlourlllng for those who are killed.

THE SUN DRAWING WIATER
It frequently happens that when the
sun is toward its setting poillt in the
west streaks of alternate light and
darkness are seen descending from
the sun toward the earth. This is
commonly spoken of under the lille
of “the sun drawing water." and
many who have not particularly
thought oi' the question have supposed
that it actually indicates a time when
the sun is drawing water up through
these light streaks. The phellouleu-
on, however, is totally nlisnamed, for
it is nothing more than streaks of
iight alternating with shadows pro-
duced by the clouds. The dark streaks
ill the phenomenon are the shadows
produced by the clouds, and the light
streaks are the rays of the sun passing
to the earth between tile clouds. and

tern are lighted when they pass

RHUBARD SHORTCAKE WITH
CREAM
While the spring rlluharb is still
with us, another group of' recipes for
serving it may not he unwelcome.
Here, for example, is a rllubard short-
cake, which is not generally known:
Rhubard Shortcake-Chop lille unc
cupful oi' mixed dates and raisins,
stoned. Add thcln to two cups of
rich, thick rhubarb sauce ami cook
live minutes. Split a sllortcake made
by any preferred rule und spread
each layer with the fruit. l‘llt to-
gether und cover with whipped cream.
Tile rhubarb sauce is made as fol-
lows: Stew two pounds ouch ol’ rllu-
barb nnd sugar (or less sugar ilflllo
rhubarb is preferred turt) with the
juice and grated rind uf n lemon und
n cupful oi' raisins, without any water.
(look until soft, stirring often. (Tool
quickly and serve,
Almond and Rhubarb Jelly.-To
about one qllurt. oi` hot sweetened
stewed rhubarb, add one heaping
tublespoollful of gelatine, dissolved in
a little cold water. Stir well, put in
a llnlldi'lli of chopped almonds and
pour illto individual moulds. When
cold serve with cream or boiled cus-
turd.
Rhubarb Frltters.-Cut illc rhllbarb
ill two illcll lengths and cook ill a rich
sugar syrup until tender, taking care
that the rllubarll is not broken. Let ii
lie ill the syrup lllltil cold, then llraiu
carefully. Place two or tllrcc pieces
together and dust thickly with pow-
dered sugar. Mnkc n batter with one
cnpl`ul of lllilk, twc bcntcu eggs and
one and one-half cups ol' flour. into
which one icaspooutul of baking pow-
der and one teaspoorlful of sugar
have been sifted. Add the milk to the
eggs. with a pinch of sail; thou add
the flour mixture. Mix lllroughily,
dlp each little bundle of rhubarb into
the hater and fry ill deep hot fat.
Drain on unglnzed paper, roll ill gra-
nulated sugar. aull servo at once with
the syrup drained from the rhubarb.
..Rhubarb Conserve-ill England
rhubarb is used for the basis for muny
collservcs. (‘oulblnell with ornllgos, it
makes a delicious conserve. Two
quarts of rlluburb, cut ill small pieces,
the chopped rind oi' three oranges;
liw julrc und pulp of six oranges.
Weight all, take pound for ppculld of
lsugar, nlix, and cook ulltil thick.
