His death was caused by falling into the hold of eflarze, newly-launched vessel at ' orki A ladder on the hich he was w g. cf the vessel, on which he was standing, suddenly gave way, precipitating him to the bottom ofthe hold. © He lived only a few hours after the accident. Every character in the play was well taken, and Mise Tucker, Mr. Meldon and the clever ladies and gentlemen supporting them woo many new admirers by their excellent work A detachment of Engineers took part in the production, with good effect The specialties between the acts evoked great Jaughter and applause, and the eelec- tions by Vinaicombe’s Orchestra were fully appreciated. Sir,—It is to be hoped that the Patriot of Oct. Sth, instant, will not be read by up-to-date men in the practice of surgery outside of our own little Island corner. When we find some of our old graduates puff themselves ever a simple operation for appendicitis (but wrongly described by those gent’emen es “an abscess formed in the appendicitis”) it only shows more clearly than ever that Darwin was correct in pointing out thatthe presence of the appendix vermiformis in man was another proof of his relation to more Jowly forms of animal life. We sre sure the fourth doctor mentioned must have been more mortified than even the “ abscess formed in the appendicitis” whea he found. him- se!f late for the great, dangerons and rare operation 60 successfully performed !! MoGitt Srupenr. KOOTENAY. Hawivroy, Jan. 21, 1895. Mr. Ryckman Dean Six —I have been conversing this day with Mrs. E. Clarkson, 138 Hannah street east, this city, who claims to have received great benefit from the use of the Kooteney Cure, which is sold eo generally by you al the present time. Her special trouble was Bright’s disease, and was of nine years standing. It was so pronounced by two physicians. While she does not claim to be completely cured, having taken only four bottles of the remedy, yet she feels so much better that she does not hesitate to recommend its use to any one afficted as she has been. The pains in her head have entirely ceased, and almost from the back. The complexion wears the glow of healti and the puffed appearance is gone from the face. She has increased nine pounds in weight in two months, and is thereby encouraged to believe that what has so improved her physiciul condition will ultimately ac- complish # complete cure, J. It was hoped that the government might have seen its way clear atthe last moment to put itself right in the matter of the steamship subsidies to Portland. But it appears that the line whose business it will be to turn the traffic from Canadian to New England ports is to bave nearly two thirds of all the subsidies granted for the transatlantic trade. On thelast day the goverament has come down with a reduc- tion of subsidies. But the line to suffer is not the one which received the most and which does its whole winter business through a foreiga port. The Port- land subsidy is not touched. It is the Beaver line that suffers. This is the strong- service, Itis thelinethat gave Canada the first through winter trade it ever got. It isthe originator and pieueer in the wesiern export trade throngh St. John. The company owning the Beaver line took hold of the winter port business Jast year with an energy and courage which the peo- ple of St. John will not forget. Traffic was turned in this direction that would havegone to Portlani and Boston, and the way was broken for other lines tocome in aud share in the trade. Yet this company is the only one whose subsidy is reduced. The Port- land service with $126,000 a year is not disturbed. The saving of $5,000 could not be made out of that foreign service without a year and a half notice, but the St. John service, which wasas much an annual contract as the Allan’s, is reduced twenty percent. Thisis done not only without notice, but in the face of a notice our distinct promise that it would not be done. The members for Portland will be home this week from their worse than use- less sojourn in Ottawa and the people will probably talk to them about it.
