more than ten months Joseph Vial,
the young _-lustralian who received
such brutality treatment at the hands
of his savage German jailcrs lti Lepi-
zlg. has at last passed away, according
to word received recently from Rot-
terdam by Elmer L. Luck, l\l.A., of
the Edmonton. Alta.. High School
staff. This adds the last chapter to one
ot' the saddest. and most- pitiful .stories
of Gerinau cruelty which has come to
light since the beginning ofthe war.
Born in New Castle, N.S.W., in
1895, Joseph Vial early iii life showed
exceptional musical ability. and at the
age of fifteen was well kuown in the
loading cities oi' Australia as a con-
tcrt violinist. The money earned by
his playing enabled him to go to Leip-
zig in 1911 to study at the Royal Cot.
servatory oi' Music, and at the time
7266-2-9-M81. war was declared he was recognized as _,
one of the cleverest and most promis-
ing violin students in Leipzig.
On September 5. 1914. the male
British subjects in Leipzig (about 60 in
ull, including Mr. Vial and Mr. Luck)
were arrested and mprlsoned lu the
r-ity jail, solely for the crime of being
British subjects. At the time of the
arrest Vial was in perfect health. lir-
was placed in the same cell with a ttib-

six hours. which almost cost Vial his

The patient was lovingly cared for
in the Rotterdam Zickenhuie. one of
Europe‘s most famous hospitals. The
doctors considered the long trip to
his home in-Australia as absolutely
out of the question, so, after a week's
rest, he was taken on to England to
St. Margaret's Hospital in Ramsgate,
where he remained until his death a
few weeks ago,
_immediately after their arrival in
Holland Mr. Luck had written to the
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin J. Vial.

_when it arrived, was the first word,
direct or"indirect, they had had since

mother all the way to England to see
ber boy before he died. and to pro-

She arrived lti August after travelling
for nearly two months via San Fran-
cisco and New York. and remained
with him day and night till his death

During the last few months his pa-
thetic story has been a powerful stim-
ulus to recruiting in Britain, where
the details have been given wide ptib-
illclty, along with photographs show-
iiig him as he was in health, and as
he appeared on his arrival in ltnnis-

of his former cheerful and liuppy self.

found than in the driving of one or
other class of these small. but strong
and' hardy, members of the horse
tribe. _
Where action and, style is desired,
the hackney pony fills the blllfwhlle
for children who are to drive and
“ru ` ,their own animal there are
the Mister Shetland or Welgyponles.
The average pony is particularly
strong and can stand his 20 miles
with several small follt in the car-
riage. Thespeed of the larger ponies
ls not to be despised; in fact. some of
them come well within the three-
minute classx- Since the motor car
has so largely taken the place of
that ilne stylish hackney. being used
both for pleasure and speed. the horse
most popular with those who can af-
ford it is the hunter or other saddle
horse. and so that the rider can _be
at home and enjoy himself in the
saddle. it is important that he learn
the art of riding in childhood. For
this purpose the pony is splendldly
suited. and no better exercise-can be
found for the boy or girl than regu-
lar practice-_ln the saddle.
For absolute utility purposes. the
pony may never become generally
popular in Canada, though there are
possibilities for his use to advantage
in rough sections where packing is
necessary, but as a source oi' pleas-
ure he no doubt has ti great future.
Numbers and quality of many
kinds of ponies are greatly on the lu-
crease in Ontario, if the shows ciili
be taken as an indication of the state
of the industry, though demand is
somewhat at u standstill at the pres-
eut. because the pony is, after ull.

the upkeep of these small animals
does not entail great expense, they
