' 4 FITTING SEND-OFF RUSSIIINS AND GERMITNS HS’SIDE C0 T0 VOLUNTEERS ARE STUBBORNLY FIGHTING IN CLOSIN The volunteeers who left yesterday morning for Halifax were given a send- off worthy of the cause to which they had given their services, and of the province. Although in civilian clothes. each looked every- inch a soldier, and those who saw them march to the steamer felt sure that they would give a good account of themselves in what- ever position the exigencies of war may place them. Notwithstanding the early hour thousands of citizens were on hand to see them off and say good- bye and good luck. Forming in the Drill Shed they marched along Kent Street to Queen Street and 1,0 the Northumberland, preceded by the 4th Regiment Band, which played appro- priate patriotic and stirring iiiurcliiiig selections. When the Berlin put into Trondhjeln, the Ad- miralty says, she was “almost empty of coal and with her speed consider- ably redlwed, due Presumably to fast steaming.” Continuing the report says: "She has especially been fitted for mine-laying, but so fur as known she now has no mines oil board. the probability being that these have been sown on the higll seas under cover of darkness. From past experience it is known that the track of nierchaiit shipping, neutral as well as British, is a favored locality for their operations. German floating mines are constantly being sighted. '4.-'rilere is still lacking reliable news of the progress of the battle.iii Poland. _An unofficial depatch from Petrograd says thc battle of Lodz has ended in success to thc Russians, but this stittelllent is opposed to the Berlin oificialireporl., which says the German offensive oi' Poland is tak- ing its normal course. '1`ile fact is that the lighting iii this region has developed into such a juilible that it is nlinost impossible to i`ollow ii.. Tile most ilnportaiit factpr from the Allies' point of view is tlidt the German all- vailcc oil \Varsaw has ilot succeeded in its object, nor has it had the effect of diverting the Russians from their forward movement through the Cnr- patliians and ori to the plains oi' iiun- gary. or against the fortress of Cracow. As with the case of Przcmysl, which held out so long' against Russian attacks before tlieili, military men do not look for an curly full oi' Cracow, and are rather inclined to believe that the arniies of Emperor Nicholas will endeavour to keep the large Austrian force inside tile fortress and enter Silesiu from the south-east. However niiich depends on battle being fought between the River Vlsiulu and the Warthe, :ind in which all agree the losses oil both sides are very heavy. There is an inclination to believe that had there been any probability ol' an curly success for Gernlliiis in this field Eniperor Williani, who has returned to Berlin, would have rellisined to witness the victory of his troops.
