_—---—_—_—_ * ae Tas Le a RR And Another Tale of Shipwreck and Death on the Coast of New- foundland. Sr. Joun’s, Nrup., Dee. 23. — The Government of Newfeundland has just received a despatch from the Bay et islands frem Capt. George Shepherd, cemmander of a relief party sent off seme weeks age by the Newfoundland authorities in search of the erew ef the schooner Arabella, which had been dis- covered capsized some ten miles off the Bay. ‘Ihe result ef the expleration ef the search party was that the capsized seheener proved te be the Arabella, of St. John’s Nfld. She was en a voyage from Chatteau, Labrador, with part of a cargo of herring, and was bound for the Bay of Islands to complete her fare. In ene of those terrifie gales that have recently swept the west coast et New- foundland and strewn miles of its strand with dead bodies and floating wreekage, the Arabella was thrown on her beam ends. The squall that eap- sized her must have been sudden, as no attempt to cut away her spars to ease the vessel was discernable. One corpse only was feund on beard the illfated schr. It was identitied as the body of one Thomas Parsons. The schooner’s beat was gene and the remainder ef the crew and one passenger, as has since been ascertained, struck out fer the shore, but never reached it. But with a number of persons en board was seen by peeple on shore heading in the di- rection of Port-au-Pert, but Captain Shepherd says in his despatch that it was utterly impossible for any open beat te live while passing ever the shoals and reefs that lie between the position of the schooner when 7 doned by her crew and the harboP ef Port-au-l’ert. Captain; Shepherd and his party spent seven days in making a diligent search along the neighboring coast, examining every creek and res ceding ceve where a boatwas likely to effect a landing, but the search preved completely unavailing. In all human probability the ence living freight car- ried by the Arabella has become a wholesale sacritice to the remerseless fury of the tempest. An Irishman who hada pig in his possession was observed to adept the censtant practice of filling it te repletion ene day and starving it the next. On being asked his reason for doing so, he replies, ‘Och, sure, and isn’t it that | like to have bacen with a strake o’ fat and a strake e’ lane aqually, ene after tether.’ icin aiden diel atgttinedaemeniotciiden M.
