THURSDAY, APRIL ‘l, 1938 than ~ What Does This Means ‘Ii In the estimates for the current year appears the item: "Renovaiitins Court House Building, $20,000." \Vhat does this‘mcan? Does it refer to the work recently completed for which .\lr_ Albert MacKitltion tendered $25,000? If so there must be something wrong as the Public Accounts for the year show that $10,536.50 net had been paid together with $15,134 insurance. It would thus appear that no less than $45,- 670.50 ivas being expended on renovating the Law Courts building. The Legislative Reports 1t is unprecedented for a Government to bring down the lfbllllltllifs‘ for the current year without providing the members of the House with all the departmental reports. It is quite im- possible for the members, and the public whom they represent. to follow intelligently the budget speech reviewing the year's operations unless they have before them the ofificial reports, de- tailing the expenditures of the past year with regard to the subjects under review. This is what the Cillllpllfill Government has done this year. Only four reports-Public Accounts, Old Age Pensions Commission, Edu- cation Department. and Public Health (includ- ing the Provincial Sanatorium Commission re- port) had been tabled when the Premier, on Tuesday night, delivered his budget speech and tabled the Estimates. There remained unpresent- ed, among other reports, those of Public Works and Ilighwziys, and Filcoiiwood Hospital. The Public \\'orks report was only tabled yesterday afternoon The Premier in his speech quoted lengthy ex- cerpts front what was apparently the R.C.l\![.P. and Prohibition enforcement report. But the report itself was not then tabled and distributed, as it should have been. Another report formerly presented was that of the Prohibition Commission, detailing the Government's liquor transactions. The Legisla- ture and the public are now deprived of this in formation. Also. there has been no report tabled of the Fisherineifs Loan Commission, whose members excccdctl their estimate for administrative ex- penses by a large margin last year. Ignorant as the rank and file of the members must bc of the details of administration, without the. opportiitiity- of czircftil reading and analysis of the reports, it is significant that not one word of protest has been heard on this matter in the House. Last year. it will be recalled. they passed the Estimates. totalling nearly two million dollars. in the record time of thirty minutes. or at the rate of zihnut seventy thousand dollars a minute. lt was the taxpayers‘ money-not theirs. Our British Bacon Market liven our Liberal legislators arc now agreed that our bacon quota in the British market—— obtained by the llciinett tioveriiinetit under the Empire pacts of 1ti_t.'—-is one of the greatest bonus the farincrs of this country ever obtziin- ed. The quality of Canadian bacon is much ‘better than in the past, but there is room for improvement in the selec- tion of weights.
