AUSTRALIANS RESORT TO SUMMER WOOLLIES SYDNEY, Australia, Feb. 2 — (OP) — So much natural rein has (alien around Sydney in the last three months that rain making experiments by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Re- search have had to be postponed indefinitely. A fully equipped ‘R. A._A. P. Liberator has been standing by at Richmond eirdrome near Sydney since last October walfllg for a, fow days fine weather to take the scientists up. Last month was the wettest December since i920 and this monlh looks like being 1n all-time record for a wet January. More than double the average rainfall for the month hes been recorded in the first half of the montli. Freaklsii weather has caused many to return to their woolliea and lizht fires in homes. Snow- flakes have been seen in Sydney where it never snows in the winter - let alone the summer. The C- S. I. R. have announced that they will make ertiflclahrain when the natural rain stops long Omllgh for them to set to their work. _ l tldilllliNdlvoli eolnt LEAVE Mlzllolllelil I'M 50 AFRAiD OF THUNDER - ' EED S '\\ ‘R l!" f’, AND UGliTNlNG! 9on1 MARRIED ll , l>,oeov' ‘MEONLY Tl-IING HE'S PROTECTING llllsslz ems ls I NSONNJJFE! West, not knowing whether to lead a spade or diamond and fearing that he would gues wrong, decided to open his own five-card heart suit and therefore led the ten. This was ducked in dummy and But put up the king. The heart tour now knocked out the blank ace. A low club was ‘led from dummy and when East played tho nine, South won with the king. South new cashed the , heart queen, then led a spade to the king and returned another club toward his own hand. East, to avoid being "locked in”, put up the club ace and exited with the club jack. His relief. however did not last long! Declarer cashed the queen and the thirteenth club, discarding a. diamond from dummy then took a diamond finesse to the ten spot. East, in with the jack, had to lead a. spade or dia- mond up to dummy, and this gave South all the tricks he needed. Unfortunately, there is enough space to go into the dif- ference it would have made if East had played the heart Jack on the first trick, but I strongly urge my readers to try this variation for themselves! If South takes the first trick with the queen, East sac- rifices his heart king to dummy’s blank ace at the earliest opport- unity, and from that point on, South is not in an enviable posit- ion! .
